In the case of a US Spec 95-97 models the engine computer and it's various sensor inputs control the electronics within the transmission. In the 93-94 models there is a seperate transmission computer logically in between the engine computer and transmission using the same or similar sensors. Also both versions implement a cable attached to the throttle to regulate some aspects of the shifting process.
