I thought I saw a JDM forum, but cannot see it now.

What diesel was sold in the JDM for a '97 80 series?

Does this engine ever become available through those companies that import & sell the low mileage Japanese engines ?

I think it would be the 1HD-FT (24 Valve 1HD-T)
or it will be one of those crap electric ones "1HD-FTE"
I hate computers in vehicles.

FTE came along in the 100 series. Big step up.

X2 .. just more happy knowing what exactly happen inside there ..

I can see it being nice at times but I will avoid one in my future landcruisers for a very long time. I might just stick to getting 1hz in my future trucks and k.i.s.s.

as long as mud is around I will still be paying for a membership because this site is a huge help

1HDT(non intercooled) or 1HDFT(intercooled) I have a Japanese spec Cruiser with the 1HDT. It's freaking awesome. And yes- there are companies that sell the engine but it is not cheap and hard to come by. Expect to pay between 8 and 12grand for the eingine alone. I have heard of the complete transplant of a 1HDT and tranny into a gas 80 costing as much as 17 grand.

yup.
a 1hz, trans, h55f trio is about 7.5 grand.
Turbo that add 3 grand.
intercool that add 2

If you have the money its a great engine. I LOVE my 1HD-T.

Well... You can't get a GREAT 81 for that price. Or at least you shouldn't be able too. Problem is a bunch were brought in and the market was flooded which dropped the price. Also people get bored and sell them cheaply which lowers the market price as well.

Still, if you want a "great" 81 according to Terra 2 imports where most of them come from expect to pay around 25 grand all in.

Outback Imports sells them for quite a bit more than that in virtually as new condition. The list of procedures they complete on them is massive.

The JDM section is still there but burried way over in the club section by the girls garage. Not sure why Woody put it there? INTL- JDM Owners Alliance

BTW, where are you? As Electric Dyck said, in Canada, the HDJ80s aren't that expensive anymore. But for 10K it would be tough to find one in good condition with a 5spd.

Vancouver Island. I do realize that you can pick one up for a price much lower than they were a couple of years ago. However, I do keep a eye out for them and I am unaware of any HDJ81 in recommendable shape for 10k. 5sp or not. The average price at the moment seems to be between 14 or 15 grand and at that price you'd have to be willing to settle for a less than perfect example.

Perfect and great are 2 different things, if you want perfect you have to pay someone like outback to replace all parts and detail the crap out of it. It is a 15 year old used car.

$10k is bringing one over from Japan yourself. Manuals are hard to find in an 80 but there are tons of great autos you could get over here for around $10k, I don't know why anyone would buy a half cut if they cost the same as a whole truck.

Wow! What site is this??! I had no idea or I might have bought one there.

Even so- if you set the price for $10-20 the nice ones pop up. For $10 and under you get a plain jane stock high km model. Some of them over 300 000km. You also have to factor in the landing costs and expenses. (BC govt. has to get their cut) and expenses of making it legal to drive here.

Sounds like you want to pay $20k + for a mint one. Can't get wine on a beer budget.

I paid 650 000 yen for mine, $1500 shipping, $1000 or so duty fees, $500 repairs and inspection, all in all around $10k.

It had no rust, nice interior, 35s, 6" lift, 125 000 km, and some chopsticks under the seat.

It can be done for a reasonable price, don't believe the hype.

I never said $20+ for a mint one. I just said if you set it your link above for $10-20 the nice ones pop up.

I paid about 12 for mine. Already landed and drivable. Which I considered a good deal. 4'' lift, new 33'' Yokohama M/Ts. I've since put about 5k into it with mods and minor repairs. Maybe another 6k to go before I'm happy.

I'm not sure if I would do it all again. Probably not. I'd be a little more patient and wait around for a Cummin's swapped 60 from the US. But It's too late now! DOH!

AFAIK no 1HD-FT's were ever intercooled from the factory. Certainly in oz they were not. The 1HD-FTE's in the 100series copped a small intercooler i think whereas the FTE's in the 79series utes didn't.

The 1HD-FT is a great diesel, but is rarer than the 1HD-T. Because of that it commands a high price and can be expensive to repair if you do some damage.

Decent 1997 80 series with the 1HD-FT are still selling from $25000 AUD. Some are even around $30000 AUD and higher! They are holding there value very very well for a 13-15 year old 4wd! :D

There was a version of the 1HD-FT that was intercooled from the factory. According to Wikipedia anyways.

1HD-FTE

The version with intercooler has 196 hp (144 kW) at 3400 rpm with 317.1 ft·lbf (430 N·m) of torque at 1200-3200 rpm with a redline reaching 4000 rpm.

Of course you can just buy a Denco Intercooler and mount that on the 1HDT. For about 2grand. The power gains are apparently quite impressive.

The intercooled 1HD-FTE is the engine in the 100 series. It was never used in the 80 series.

Yes, but you can't compare the two, they are different animals. The 1HD-FT is pure mechanical injection and the 1HD-FTE is electronic. 1HD-FT were in 80 series only and produced from 1995 to 1997. The 1HD-FTE was in the 100 series, and it was intercooled. The OP is talking about 97 model 80series.
The 1HD-T and 1HD-FT's, which both came in 80 series, are great engines in stock condition. Of course you can always fit an aftercooler and wind the boost and fuel up to give it some more balls if you want. :grinpimp:

The 1HD-FT was available in the 80 series from 1995/01-1998/01. It remained in production until 1999/07, being fitted to the HDB50/51 JDM Coaster.
