So I've got an engine knock. It sounds like this:

And I dont know what the best and cheapest route would be. I live in Northern GA- is there anyone out there that knows someone who can help me locally? Any LC heads with engine rebuild knowledge. I'm really trying to save as much money as possible bc this truck is my only mode of transport and I'm rebuilding my life after a hard 5 years. Any help would be appreciated!

What recent work has been done?

What brand of oil filter do you have on it? Yes, this is important.

How many miles, maintenance history, blood type, resting heart rate, and next of kin please.

Edit: ^^^Beat me to it^^^

Does the instrument cluster show oil pressure on the gauge?
What viscosity of oil is in the engine?
Does the engine have a name brand oil filter (which brand)?
How long have you driven it with that knock and did the engine knock as soon as you got it started (after sitting for ?years) or did the knock appear after driving it awhile??
Has the engine had any work done it?

I replaced the spark plugs, recent oil change with the Toyota oil filter - 90915YZZD3. Its been sitting for 13 years and I just got it started. I did everything that I needed to do to start it softly: sprayed penetrating oil on each cylinder, etc....

Oil: 5w-30
It started with the knock.

The engine has not had any work done on it.

198,000 miles, Oil Pressure is at 1/3.

@slow95z runs a cruiser salvage yard in your neck of the woods. Grab a good used engine off him and drop it in. That's the cheapest and quickest solution to get you up and running, as it seems this engine is out for the count

Man we just finished a rebuild for someone lol.

We can do a used one, new or rebuilt one for you but I don't have any used 95+ engines I am willing to sell. We are doing our own installs now and saving them for that.

OK Even though you've just changed the oil, you need to contact Blackstone Labs and have them send you a collection set to drain some oil and send in a sample for analysis.. Its about $35 for this, but well worth the diagnosis.

I send in a sample on mine every other oil change so I constantly monitor my engine health. They helped me catch a torn air filter.

Second, you need to run a compression test and a leak down test to determine if you have any obvious symptoms there.

Should also do an exhaust gases test on the radiator to see if you're getting anything there.

Third, any history on the engine? There are documented cases of the power steering pump gear making noise, making people think the bearings are toast.

I'll admit that sounds like either a rod knock or a wrist pin knock, but you should do a PROPER diagnosis on everything before you start throwing money at it.

Just because there is water or a milky substance coming out the tailpipe, that means nothing unless you've been rolling down the highway at 50 MPH and it suddenly occurs. if this is first time in 13 years it has been run, then it could be residual moisture in the exhaust.

Although, it hasn't run in 13 years. Why was it parked? Because the engine started making noise?

Again, PROPER diagnosis of all systems in order to determine the next course of action.

Throwing the parts cannon at it gets expensive.

What oil filter did you take OFF?

Okay, I will send out the oil to Blackstone Labs. I don't know what oil filter I took off. I just know it was white and HUGE. I think it was a generic one that a family member had done somewhere. There's no history on the engine. It was parked because my sister couldn't drive it anymore, I was in grad school at the time. I'm going to do a compression test and a leak down test as well.

If it was white and huge, it could have been a WIX brand. Those filters are known to be a fatal blow for this engine.

It's too late at this point, but I would consider that as part of the official diagnosis. If it indeed had a Wix 51515 filter on it (or the other one --there are two) the internal valve fails and starves the engine of oil.

If you find that this is indeed the oil filter, then I would stop looking for head gasket or that and assume the crank is toast.

You could rebuild the engine you have as well, depending on your needs and abilities.

okay- I may just rebuild it myself. Okay. thank you so much.

@Cruisin' Becky
Why waste your money with black stone, if it is knocking it’s not good. I however drove my 94 with piston slap for a long time, after the engine is nice and warm does it quite down at all? If when you say the oil is milky, where are you seeing this? Have @slow95z
Install a used engine and go on with life. If money is tight this is not a cheap truck to maintain at first, there are some things that can wait and be ok. I would def get with someone who knows cruisers and not some guy that works whatever’s.

really? it does quiet down after it warms up. Should I drive it until I have the money to fix it/replace it?

So I will tell you mine. I had on my 94 a kick come on ever so slightly, changed oil was still there. I was running napa and wix filters, wix makes napa. Both of them are black filiters. My truck sounded bad on first cold starts then would quit down after it was nice and warm. The knock was always still there. I ran 10 40 oil. I did also do compression test all the cylinders were low 160 to 140, didn’t care about the engine really but with all cylinders pretty close I drove it, as my plan was to swap it out. I drove it 25 to 30k more with the knock. Wheeled the snot out of it the whole time, slapped it off the rev limiter when I ran snow runs.
I also had another vehicle I could drive. So I’d don’t worry to much, and if I wanted to go wheel I did, doing long hwy miles as well.
When I rebuilt a few of these engines in 15 for basic rebuild with Toyota parts was about 3500- 4000 bucks. If you can do the labor good. For my 94 I bought a used engine and was going to just drop it in untouched for 350 I think it was.
But then I got lazy and just kept driving it, then bought a cherry 96, pulled off the stuff I wanted and swapped it over to the 96 and my 94 has been parked. Pics make stuff better

94 is first pic right before I swapped everything to the red 96

oh man- I may do this. I just need a vehicle right now and I'm really worried that I'm going to like blow up the engine or something. I just need something to get me to work and home. I'm really starting from the bottom here.

The knock that was in the video that I posted in the beginning, is that what yours sounded like? I think it's one of the bearings and maybe a rod cap that's loose?
