After long late night hours (and a new igniter, new ignition coil, new "used" ECU, etc.) of searching for the reason my '80 wouldn't start, I found that the wiring harness has a short in it. I ordered a replacement and am now in the process of removing the old one.

I had no problems removing the harness from the ECM, through the firewall and up and over the engine. I then had to remove the throttle body to disconnect the first leg of the "Y" of the engine harness - this is the leg that interfaces with the distributor. Now, my question is: where does the other major leg of the harness go? There are a couple of high-density connectors that interface with something, I just don't know what (there is also a really L O N G section that I haven't tracked down yet.)

I DO NOT want to have to remove the air-intake section if I can avoid it. Can anyone give me any hints on replacing that leg of the harness? Does anyone have a good illustration or picture of where things should go. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Manny

Locked, loaded, but no bullets...

Manny,

Where are you located? I have a factory Electrical Wiring Diagram book, and I'm in Gilbert. Are you close by? If so, shoot me a PM.

That other branch heads south to the 3 temp sensors, oil pressure, oil level sensor. It then heads rearward and there is 2 large tranny connectors and continues on, up and over the tranny to get the shift selector of the tranny and t-case and then continues on to the front and rear O2 sensors.

This is from memory but I think it's pretty much complete. There is also 2 hold downs along the way. Getting the harness portion that goes up and over the tranny out from the firewall was a real PITA as there are metal tubes that run along there as well.

Any particular hints on getting to the tranny plugs?

getting to the plugs aren't really a problem, snaking the harness through the firewall was the real issue. The plugs kept getting hung up and caught. But for you that isn't much of an issue is it, just cut the plugs off and you're free.

The tranny plugs will be tough. Taking the starter out will help a lot. When you can get to them they will be difficult to pull out since the seals on the plugs are dryed up from the heat. Before putting my plugs together I put some dialectic grease on the seals. You will notice them slip together much easier and come apart easier if you decide to re-route. You may want to lower the tranny to give you more room. I use and an angled pick that has been dulled to push the locking clips.

Thanks for the hints. I guess I was expecting an easy 'plug n' play' solution. Lowering the tranny seems like a HELLAVA lot of work!
