For some local customers, I have misted it with water from a spray bottle and then put it into the dryer at a medium heat for 2-3 minutes. That seemed to really help soften it up and make it more pliable for the initial installation. I have also found that it takes multiple strips of velcro to get it nice and tight to the dash, but the misting/heating helped quite a bit too.
 
Late to this but I was looking for a good dashmat...thanks for posting the pic with the black option. I was "ok" with the tan on oak, but I REALLY like the black on Oak...exterior paint is Black so it should compliment nicely.

The more inconspicuous a dash mat is the better imho. Black is the official wardrobe color for ninjas for good reasons.
