Yup, I just had this on my 96. It wasn't obvious until the colder weather came
I also started getting a CEL p0116 which is about the engine temperature sensor not moving enough in a specified range.
It was either a bad temp sensor or a stuck thermostat, since it took forever to heat up on the scan gauge and through the heat vents I knew it was the thermostat.
 
Make sure that the rad is full, this is damn easy, then the t-stat
 
Pretty likely the thermostat - had it happen on a trip in our '97. Picture below of new on the left and defective stuck open on the right. At least stuck open is better than stuck closed...

Its worth giving your fan blades a spin with the motor off. They aughta move freely. My fan clutch went bad (blades didnt spin freely, rather they spun full speed w the engine), truck ran cold.

I swapped thermostat at same time.
