Hi guys, I'm new on this list from New Zealand and have just bought a pretty gutless Prado SW [a 3L TD would be ideal but this engine is in excelent condition]. It's in very good nik but typically gets a tad hot when cruising at 100kph, I thought I'd fit an intercooler & twin electric fans & an auto trans cooler to help keep it cool, especially when off roading. Anybody have any info on fitting an intercooler on a 2.4?
Any help will be appreciated!

running a tad hot...
get the rad recored with 3 3/4" tubes.

intercooler will not change the water temps, you do realise this right?

to increase the performance and decrease the EGTs disconect the waste gate actuator rubber line and plug it off. this will give you 14 lbs of boost and it will be VERY difficult to get over 1000F on the pyro.

as for the intercooler i would go with one that mounts on top of the engine since the area in front of the rad is extremely tight or you can do some fancy cutting and piping to make it work...

cheers
BTW, do a search on the problems with the heads on this engine...interesting reading... you might want a case of your favorite byyour side, there is a LOT of info sitting here....

Thanks Gary! Yes I do realise that, I want achieve an increase in power though it seems an intercooler may introduce exta turbo lag...
I sussed out the running hot problem, the coolant was old & dirty & so contributed to corrosion of the waterneck/cap area. I had to clean up & lap in the seat/sealing area inside the neck as it was obvious the cap was not sealing/maintaining any pressure, the thermostat was fairly new looking and tested fine, with the system flushed & a 50/50 mix of antifreeze/inhibitor in she ran normal temp at 100 kph.
The radiater & the head are near new, 3 yrs ago according to receipts I have.
Thanks for the waste gate tip, I'll give it a try.
I think some Toyota light trucks had a 2.4 intercooled turbo, maybe I can find one here worth fitting?
Mine has done 209K's and the only thing wrong with it now is the clear coat on the bonnet & roof has eroded badly, It is common on this model I hear, I'll repaint them later. Not a bad buy for $4k NZ eh!
It is replacing my old 69 SWB Landrover with a Falcon 250 in it, mainly used for deer/pheasant hunting & firewood hauling.
