Can someone please provide me close-up detail pictures of where the following items are mounted for a 9/73 production date FJ40 (the SOR catalog pics didn't help me much):

- Hood latch (would think this should be easy to find but I can't find mounting holes that look like they will fit my latch).

- Horn

Also, if you have picture of the proper evap/gas tank hose connections and mounting point for the evap thingy (see below) that would be great:

TIA!

Cool thx - that pic reminds me I also will be needing to find the coolant resevoir -- don't think I've seen that in many years - I take it that is the OEM resevoir and mounting locations...

Yeah, now that you mention it I vaguely remember that the resevoir I had mounted on a little bracket attached to one of the rods that held the battery in place...wonder what I did with it

I meant an under-hood type latch (not the ones on the side).

That is the diagram I was looking at regarding the latch. It would make sense I suppose, since I can't find mounting holes, that a 9/73 doesn't have them.

Although its somewhat amazing (to me at least) that the mounting holes for the later model style wouldn't at least be there given that Toyota seems to like to incorporate things like that into the build as early on as possible.

Of course I stupidly thought I had just lost the latch in my recent move and ordered one from SOR --

Thanks!

Coolerman, is that the horn location on your 71, because my 4/73 has each horn, mounted to small brackets with welded nuts on each side of the radiator support frame. They point downwards. I suspect this 9/73 would be more like my horn mount.

No hood latch, unless you have a bracket/plate and welded nuts on the left side of the bib. Otherwise that will just be the top lip of the bib, no holes. Only things that do mount to the top of the bib, is the rubber strips on the top of it.

Little black evap thing goes under the cover over the filler neck. Two bolts on the rear flange into the threaded nut things on the canister, and one through the center recessed hole. Three lines come off it, to the the three small ports right above the filler port. Top single line, runs down, should have a palstic one way valve thing in it, and then ties into a metal line that passes through the floor to the passenger side rocker. This metal line runs forward to the charcoal canister. My canister was mounted on the sloped side of the fender behind the battery and below the heater blower. From there the charcoal canister line went over to the vacum switching valve on the drivers side fender. Boottom fitting on gas tank is the feed line, side port under center console is return line, FYI.

OF course you can add the hood latch if you are still painting and doing body work. Would probably have to add a little metal there I think to mount it. They are not a bad idea. Easy to drive off and forget the external latches. May save a wreck and bent hood, broken windshield.

MoCoNative, what you describe in terms of the horn mounting location actually sounds like it might be right - I have two horns, each of which has a metal strip attached to it (one with a hole, the other appears to be broken off - so I will need to drill a hole through the shorter metal strip).

Do you have a picture of your horns mounted?

Thanks,

Yep stock location for a 2/71. I think 9/71 was when they moved them to the radiator support. I found pics I had of 1972 models that have them on the radiator.

Sorry no pics right now, pretty simple settup. They just bolt on, plastic side out, opening pointed down, on each side of the radiator support with one bolt into the welded nut on the side of the support. Green with white stripe wire, I think, or green and yellow go over with a spade connector, one on each side of the engine bay. I commonly have the passenger one break off for some reason, just that side, wire breaks at the terminal. Old and fatigued I guess.

The way they hang down, would lend to the one being broken, vibrate a little and probably could crack the metal mounting strip.
