Quick Update:

This morning, I had a call with the Silverton Town Supervisor and have a few updates.

-Ophir AND Super Secret are OPEN and will remain open unless something drastic changes. Black Bear is closed and portions of California/Corkscrew are closed. Everyone is well aware of how important Black Bear is to bringing business to Telluride, so they're working on getting that open. She wanted to know what trails were important to HIH in terms of openings for our event. I mentioned BB and Cali/Cork. They are working directly with USFS on our behalf.

-The road between Durango and Silverton is open with an escort today. Delay times are around 20 minutes. Chris and I are working on a few things. One of them may be an alternate/adventure route (with a trail leader) over Stoney Pass and into town that way. Stoney Pass is a super cool route and does have some obstacles. Pulling a trailer would be doable if it was an M416 offroad style but anything more than that wouldn't work. Nothing concrete yet as we're hoping the upcoming rains will make all of this irrelevant.

-She also mentioned how much of a ghost town that Silverton is. The Durango fire and no train service is the major reason, but there is a fairly heavy fire in Silverthorne, Colorado right now, and folks who are not familiar with Colorado read that as SilverTON. Silverthorne is in Central Colorado (Breckenridge, Frisco, Silverthorne) and a long way from Silverton.

All the businesses at the fire meeting this morning reiterated how important 100s in the Hills is to their local economy and any trail openings or assistance that we could get from USFS and BLM would be hugely beneficial to their businesses and livelihood. She even mentioned that we may not realize how important we have become to town and how much the locals appreciate and anticipate our arrival. They are fighting for us and asking for the USFS to make every effort to allow access to these trails. Of course the most important thing to us is allowing the firefighters and local officials to do their job. We just want to stay out of the way and not cause any issues. We are not a burden on town or to the area. That's one of the many reasons we choose to stay small and intimate compared to other offroad events in the area. Jeep Jamboree and FJ Summit have 300+ vehicles and we feel that that's simply too many vehicles for a small town like Silverton. We're small for a lot of reasons. This year, that "smallness" will be our saving grace.

Air quality in town is still good and there is no smell of smoke. It's a little hazy today, but otherwise there are no issues. You can expect the same excellent service that we always receive in town but I can assure you that our event will be a "make or break" factor for many of these businesses. Please, spend a few dollars in town. Buy a meal, grab a shirt or local piece of art, spend a few extra dollars here and there. Don't spend what you don't have and we're not expecting folks to waste money. If you have the means, this is the year to spend a little more time in town and support these businesses. If their summer business is like their long, cold winter business, some of these places will go under. Silverton is a small town of cool people. It's not a high-dollar tourist town like Telluride or Aspen. They rely on the outdoor and adventure industry to survive. That's us.

Again, we'll kick ass like we always do. Before donating to some of the larger, wide-ranging organizations, I will have some links available that will go directly to those in need locally. These will come directly from the Town of Silverton. As of now, there are no open flames allowed and no smoking. Please, please, please..… do not break these laws in the area before or after the event. Not only is it illegal and a bad look for HIH, but a cigar or cigarette tossed out of a window could literally destroy lives.

Rain is coming. We have plenty of time. Fire crews have already established a great suppression line north of the fire. That will more than likely stop the fire from creeping any farther north. That's great for us and the town of Silverton. They also have Wolf Creek/Purgatory protected. They will most likely allow the fire to continue to burn in the wilderness. Fire in Colorado (and all western states) is an important part of the health of an ecosystem. Some of our trees cannot even germinate and regenerate without the heat of a fire to crack their seeds. It's natural and normal and as long as lives and structures are not threatened, wildfires are allowed to burn for the health of the ecosystem. The fire will help the forest and we will help the local economy. Both will allow us to have a great event for many years to come. See you in Silverton!

Could we have a better couple of guys running this show than @bluecruiser and @paflytyer? You guys keeping us all informed with what's going on has been fantastic, and I hope you both know that it is not going unnoticed.

I bet if there are chances to buy extra raffle tickets to benefit the local economy, they would sell like hotcakes! Let us know if that will be a possibility as I will start hiding money for that very reason! Daddy needs some raffle items!!! Also, this might be a good idea for the future. A few separate items that have to sell a certain amount of tickets to be eligible to raffle. Someone like @benc could put in another item, but would be reimbursed at some kind of level, and the rest of the proceeds go towards a particular cause...either back into HIH or something like the local area's economy somehow. Big ticket items like trailers can be raffled like this! Just a little sidebar from the fire discussion.

Looks like as of this SUNDAY AM, 550 is open without escort. The fire is now 35% contained, and sounds like they are making great progress on further containment with the recent rains. Furthermore there was no increase in acreage over the past few days. All great news. Looks like the fire slowed enough that they were able to increase their containment.

Good to see that they are gaining ground on the fire. For those of you that are shipping your vehicles or want to ship them, get with me this week so we can finalize everything and get a plan together. Getting your vehicle here late won't be a great option and I would hate for someone to miss an event due to a late arrival. An estimation of weight of your vehicle loaded with camping gear would be extremely helpful.

ALL HIH PARTICIPANTS -

I have dropped the ball on this one, this announcement was due a few weeks back. @Riverrunner is formal sponsor of HIH and we highly recommend and suggest using his services if getting your 100 across the country for HIH8 is needed. He is a great guy and HIH participant.
