Hi, had a frt trans seal leak for a long time, finally ready to fix it.

I have a 1988 FJ62, 4 speed automatic.

Went to my reg parts guys (he's on the ball, not a nimrod parts counter kid), asked him to look up a frt trans seal for converter, & a pump seal, figured may as well have it while im there.

He showed me his puter was showing 3 different possiblities for auto trans's in 88. I was under impression all the 62's had the 3FE motor, & all had the same 4 speed auto?

At any rate, how do I define what trans is in my truck, If I had my head screwed on I would have written down the options he showed.

any help appreciated, Thanks, Jeff

My 88FJ62 has a A440F Automatic Transmission.

that's right

my 88 also has the a440f auto tranny...w/ electronic 4th gear overdrive. I know the 1st gear ratio is 2.95 also...
Almost all 62s had this auto in america, but i've been told that the last half of 1990 produced some 62s with the newer auto tranny found in the FJ80s (91-92). Although i've never actually seen proof of this statement, may be true. but your's is definitely the a440f unless swapped.

the difference is in the depth of the filter. make sure you get the deep one. i got the shallow filter that doesnt always pull enough fluid on inclines.

You wouldnt happen to have a part number for the right one to you Yoda? I got my tranny rebuilt about a year ago and was thinking about draining it and fillin er up with some synthetic. Figure it would be best to change the filter too.

There is nothing electronic in the A440F as far as gear selection is concerned. All gears, overdrive and torque convertor lock up are hydraulically operated.
There are some very minor differences between the later FJ62 A440Fs and the FJ80s version when compared to the first A440Fs but mostly in the size of the crank to transmission mating areas. Otherwise, they are the same and I think the change was implemented 10/89.

If there were changes made during the year (which is something Toyota does all the time), your production date and VIN# should be all you need to get the right part. Unless it has been changed and is no longer the one installed at the factory. Of course I say should be the right part, I got a emission part for 7/89 FJ62 and the part numbers were reversed, the one numbered as later one turned out to be the early one. Got the early one and it fit.

Thanks for the answers, Got frt seals. The parts fellow was showing different last digits on trans models (440H, 440F2.....) Frt seals where all same, so Im good to go. Just didnt want to have trans out & wrong seal in my hand at midnight...;p

Its been leaking qt. a day for a year, Ill be glad to finally have a night to get it done. The trucks grown on me quite a bit over the winter, maybe Ill get nuttly & fix the AC & adjust the chattery valves.

Thanks agian, Jeff In Md

i dont have the part #, but i know they had a couple different choices in the computer at the parts store.

i am gonna put my old filter back in. i only changed the filter and the fluid after overheating the tranny. the old filter wasn't but a month old.

good luck

Are you talking about OEM filter screens? There is only one offered by Toyota, to the best of my knowledge, and it is cleanable as it is simply a very fine mesh metal screen. I've never heard of a deep screen versus a shallow screen. What parts store are you talking about?
