Thank you for the detailed procedure. I'll give it a try.
Beautiful buggy.
We've thought about getting ours painted but then I'd have to be careful not to hit things.
Going to see if Baker Off road in Cumming GA can do it. I know it's simple but if anything goes wrong things get complicated and expensive real fast.

4 speed transmission update.

Had my ACC appointment. They said the dowels and bushing is fine and not the issue.
The plug had some filings on it but the fluid which was replaced in Feb 2022 had a lot of brass in it and about 3000 miles.
Since it really isn't shifting like it use to and since I feel there is more shaft noise in neutral than normal the thinking is this doesn't have a long life left.
ACC ball park estimated a staggering $12K for an H55 upgrade. Given that the truck is probably worth less than 30K and given that it is loosing reliability I'm not inclined to spend that much.
Now we are looking for a used 4 speed. ACC said rebuilding the 4 speed could present challenges getting parts.
Finally there was some speculation that 6 years of flat towing might have contributed because these 4 speeds are suppose to be extremely reliable. This doesn't sound credible to me since the transfer and transmission are always in neutral while towing.

Swap it yourself and save a few bucks. Your cruiser will thank you. HTH.

Find another shop. New H55F and t-case plus other parts should be $6k +/-. A transmission can be swapped in and out in a day.

If you were closer I’d give you a 4 speed. I have 2-3 in the shed. Can’t give them away here.
Old trucks like this you need to be able to do maintenance like this. Got to agree 12K pays for
that shop owners new Hemi Dodge maintenance, doesn’t do you much good.
Replacing a 4 sp with a 5 speed is a pretty big job. Have you got holiday road trip room in your
budget? Drive to Salt Lake and book it into Cruiser Outfitters. That’s at all the parts needed are
there and the work gets done right.

We’re in Birmingham and have spare H42s on the shelf and can order an H55. We’d be happy to give you an estimate if you need help.

Sent you a message :)

Thanks for the referrals. I've contacted both of them.
Any idea how to find reviews for either shop?
I personally know @Bama4door and he/his shop have worked on my 100 and 60. I would recommend him hands down.

He’s not too far from you down I-20

Try replacing the shift lever rubber bushing/seat.
It may not fix the issue but it’s worth a try.

The 4 speed transmission isn’t worth trying to rebuild if it’s shot. The wisest choice is to buy a new Toyota 5 speed transmission for about $2.8K. It’ll bolt right up to your vehicle with no modifications required.

Marlin Crawler makes delrin shift seats for various other Toyota 5spd transmissions that supposedly last forever and a day, though none are large enough for the H42 or H55F. I'm surprised no one makes one for these trannies, though to be fair I haven't had any issues with the OEM seat unless it's already worn. Delrin seems like a good "pop it in and forget it exists" option though. @NLXTACY you have the inside track on a few delrin parts. What's your take?

Our current plan is to tow it to Over the Mountain in Birmingham hopefully next week and get a new H55 installed.
Still waiting to schedule but I'll post when we know more.

Cole will take good care of you, great choice :)

I would just make em if needed.

Ae the s*** seats for the old tansmission? I'm going to have OTM install and H55.
I got the attached estimate from ACC it mentions some things I didn' thing would be necessary.
Itme 2 Rear engine mount, is this just PM?
Item 7 Pipe, Oil Receiver?
item 11 Boot, Clutch Release Fork? Is this just PM?
item 17,18 Crossmember Fabrication, steel, welding?
item 20,21,22,23 R&R Drive shafts PM?

No mention of any of this when I was at the shop.

You state you have an '87 therefore an H55F swap is a straight swap with the old H42. There is no welding required. Your old t-case linkage will be reused. No new crossmember needs to be fabricated.

Oil receiver is a small plastic nipple needed to oil the 5th geart.

Other items may have been listed just in case the repair is needed, such as R&R driveshafts.

Not sure if you have eliminated the motor mounts and transmission mount as a possibility, but when mine was doing the same thing it was the driver side motor mount. I would inspect all the mounts very carefully. It is not always easy to tell if they are bad.
