I'm pretty sure this means the transmission needs rebuilding but just in case there is some other issue...
What could be causing this other than an a need for a transmission rebuild?
I thought these 4 speeds were bullet proof but going bad at 250K or so doesn't seem so bullet proof to me.
Could flat towing be an issue?

Assuming I need a rebuild:
Should I go used or rebuild?
The 87 seems to be a really strange beast having slightly different part sometimes. Are there any tricky issue with the transmission part numbers?

This is my daily driver, only car, and we use it for solo off road driving ( think remote death valley all by yourself) so it has to be in top shape. If it goes in the shop it's going to have to be a quick clean job not some project.

It is zero rust and I have been told it is one of the best 60 a shop has seen. It isn't a hangar queen but I do my best to keep it at 100% function. There are a lot of reasons I don't upgrade but flat towing and not need inspection in GA are two big reasons we keep this. Plus it has been really amazingly good until the last few years.

Check your driver side motor mount.

Try replacing the shift lever rubber bushing/seat.
It may not fix the issue but it’s worth a try.

The 4 speed transmission isn’t worth trying to rebuild if it’s shot. The wisest choice is to buy a new Toyota 5 speed transmission for about $2.8K. It’ll bolt right up to your vehicle with no modifications required.

I was going to check out the 5speed. Guessing that will probably run about $3.5K. Not sure the SO will be to convinced this is such a great truck considering we spent about that much last year with a bad diff and some birfield work. Not to mention crank bearings the year before that. Objectively this thing isn't doing great. Thing is I need a 25 year old truck to avoid inspections in GA and it probably is the best 25 year old truck I can get. That and they are appreciating, that helps.

Or just don’t engine brake in first gear if you can’t hold the shifter

Motor mounts are only about a year old but I'll have them checked.
The fan doesn't hit the shroud any more so I think they are good.
That’s good but I’d still check ‘em. I once replaced mine with aftermarket motor mounts and the driver side broke again very quickly.

If you don’t wheel your rig much, it prob isn’t the mounts but they are easy enough to check.

BTW where should I shop for a replacement 4 and 5 speed and what is the 5 speed PN that is a bolt in replacement?

This is true... it is a good time to upgrade. And while it's a "bolt in" application, there are some things you need to get for it to work. There is an oiler nipple that goes inside the transfer case. While it's inexpensive ...just a few bucks, you need to split the case to install it. You can re-use the original copper gasket but some sealer/rtv will help. You may consider rebuilding it while you have it split open. A rebuild kit will come with new case gasket, idler shaft, idler bearings, output shaft bearings, stake nuts etc.

The shift stick is different so the old 4 speed shift stick isn't going into the 5 speed case. Also consider replacing your clutch while the trans/t-case are out and you have access to it. And while the clutch is out you ...you should pull the flywheel and have it re-surfaced and replace the RMS if it's leaking.

Any toyota dealer should be able to get a 5 speed. Shop around prices are all over.

do it.....best upgrade you can do with these trucks. Brings down RPM about 500 when on the freeway. Imagine going 65-70 at 2500 RPM and your engine doesn't sound like it is a rocket ship about to take off. Also, its an OEM tranny and will actually add value to your truck. Just lie to your SO about the cost...once you are into it you can bemoan the fact that its costing just a little more.....she does it with clothes, you do it with a transmission.

Seldom drive over 60 but I would like the overdrive. I have been in more than a few situations where with my 31x10.5 low range and 1st gear wasn't quite low enough to stay off the clutch or get to much speed. That granny gear really sounds good to me.

Our average 4 year maintenance spend has been 4K. Last year was 5K. The SO is asking about new trucks :-(
Any chance appreciation is covering this?

my truck is a weekend hunting rig and I have convinced her that the truck is as much a part of my identity as her hairdo it to hers. The good news is that you have something you can likely sell for what you have in it and it is not depreciating like other 4 cars in my driveway. She actually hates riding in it...but she gets her hobby, which is not cheap and I get mine. All is fair in love and war.

We had a loaner Chevy pickup and she was so glad to get back in our truck after that. We hit some mountain roads in it to go hiking and stuff that my 60 with a aussie locker shrugged of was a real event in that pickup. She also loves the attention and getting asked about it and offers to buy it. We drove the strip in Vegas and got more attention then the supper cars. The kids were with us and got a kick out of that. We'll see.

If you can’t swing a 5 speed look for a used 4 speed. They pop up from 5 speed swaps and usually aren’t very expensive.

5speed :D

We built a few today  We stock the H55F, the new tcase and/or all the parts to build them into combos. Give us a shout @ Cruiser Outfitters if we can assist. Info@cruiseroutfitters.com

this is eazy peezy ,

i had a H42 pop out of various gears while braking , and it was because my Shift Tower Dowel Pins were so far gone , the cane ball combined with a trashed blue rubber

CUP seal allowed it to do just this and that ...

this is a low cost fix to confirm and verify ..

but ........

me personally , i would take the path of MUST HAVE and call KURT @cruiseroutfit this morning 9AM Salt Lake City Local Time , and pony up for the H55F with the pre-

installed Split Transfer Case added for sure ...
