I'm pretty sure this means the transmission needs rebuilding but just in case there is some other issue...
What could be causing this other than an a need for a transmission rebuild?
I thought these 4 speeds were bullet proof but going bad at 250K or so doesn't seem so bullet proof to me.
Could flat towing be an issue?
Assuming I need a rebuild:
Should I go used or rebuild?
The 87 seems to be a really strange beast having slightly different part sometimes. Are there any tricky issue with the transmission part numbers?
This is my daily driver, only car, and we use it for solo off road driving ( think remote death valley all by yourself) so it has to be in top shape. If it goes in the shop it's going to have to be a quick clean job not some project.
It is zero rust and I have been told it is one of the best 60 a shop has seen. It isn't a hangar queen but I do my best to keep it at 100% function. There are a lot of reasons I don't upgrade but flat towing and not need inspection in GA are two big reasons we keep this. Plus it has been really amazingly good until the last few years.
