Okay,
Ordered a tune up "kit" from Cruiser Dan [thanks Dan].

I got some kind of "valve" and a grommet. I furgit what it was for and whered it goes.. The package says "Valve ScA, Vent". It is metal and looks to be about 3/8" smooth nipple on one side and 1/4" smooth nipple on the other...

I dun wanna bother Dan.

Also, I replaced plugs, air filter, Rotor, wires, Cap, Fuel filter...

I sealed a leaking intake hose off of the carburetor as well. It was about 1/4" or so and connected to a smooth nipple off the bottom of the carburetor.
She still runs a tad rough just within the first bit of putting the gas to her. Does not stall, just clears her throat. I am concerned that she will not pass smog this way.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Emee

Howdy! Are you stock or desmogged? I'm sittin here looking thru my Haynes, and there are a couple of those one way check valves. There is a brown one going to the vacuum advance diaphram. It goes in the line nearest the dizzy. There is another one between the other dizzy advance diaphram and the High Altitude Compensation Valve. Thewre are also two more vacuum lines from the carb to the HAV, and if you blocked one off, it might be affecting your off-idle throttle response. HTH John

Your "valve and grommet" are replacements for your PCV valve. It's located on the rear passenger side of the valve cover.

You guys are awesome, thanks!

Okay, I will replace that valve

I went to get her smogged..

No pass...

Tech says it is running rich. I did the ol'e stethescope thing with a piece of hose and I found that 1/4" hose that I "repaired" was still leaking. So I fixed that and I am not hearing any vacume leaks by the carb area..

Here is what I just noticed....
At the tech, when he gassed her for the test, the truck is missing a bit..
I am now noticing at idle that the truck misses as well. The tech checked the timing and it is spot on..

The plot thickenses......

A vaccuum leak is not your culprit if you are running rich. That would cause you to run lean. That miss is almost certainly related though, because that's going to leave the unburned fuel that they are detecting.

I would check your distributor first and make sure the diaphrams on the side hold vacuum. You can pull the cap off and watch the rotor move when you pull vacuum on each diaphram. The big diaphram get ported vacuum from a line on the side of the carb by the valve cover which changes timing as rpm's increase.

I would start with replacing all your vacuum lines if you haven't since you already found a leaky one. You got a copy of the factory smog manual? PM me and I can email you a copy if I can find it.

35inch is right about a vacuum leak leaning it out not cause it to run rich. What were your numbers from the smog test? I am guessing you failed from high CO?
