Has anyone ever done this? I would like to swap the whole drive train. I found a rusted out 87 fj60 w/ a good engine and just started thinking?...:)

And if you keep the fan/clutch setup, you will need a bigger shroud. Sounds like a great swap! There will be some floor pan clearance issues with the splitcase transfer, but I've heard of some guys fixin' that with a BFH or a body lift.

Easily...

Need a shorter rear driveshaft, fab tcase linkage, and a tranny mount. The torque tube x-member behind the tcase will probably have to go. Not sure if the front engine mounts will work or not.

Shouldn't be too bad, but if it was me I would use engine and mate that to a 4sp tranny/tcase from a 40 or use an SM420/465. That would be much more of a bolt-in affair. If you're going to go with the entire drivetrain, go ahead and get some more use out of the length with a H55F 5 speed. It wouldn't be anymore work.

and motor mounts.
an 87 60 would have the two fronts on the block, then instead of two more on the bell housing, the 60 will have just a single on the tcase to a frame crossmember.

should be able to get around that by using a 4speed bell housing from a 40.

or you can keep the bell housing from the sixty and use the tranny crossmenber from the sixty as well. Flanges will be a problem and the 4 tranny from the sixty will not work. And if I remember correctly, the tranny top(shifter) from fj60 will have to be converted to one from an fj40 or you will have to cut out another hole.

He is not trying to keep the three-speed case.... ;)

A 71 might not even have holes in the floor. ;) and even if it does have a floor shifter hole on the floor for the trans, it will need to be modified as the four speed top cover from a 40 four speed and a Toy three speed are not the same...

Thanks for the input. My 71 has 3 on the tree and I have a aluminum tub. I am sure the holes on the t-hump would not match up. The 3 speed is the main reason why I would want to swap the whole drive train. I am just kicking it around right now. I first thought about a FJ62 drive train, but this 60 is for sale in town, so I got to thinking about it. Iwonder if you could mate the power stearing, and the front disc brakes to it also? I love the way my 40 runs but the F engine, 3 speed and brakes leave a lot to be desired.

The discs from the knuckles out would swap over...many have done that....

There are also folks that have used the power steering gear from a 60 to put power steering in their 40.

Both of these are covered in the F A Q

Good luck!

No, Its A 60. Not sure on the production date, my guess is that its early87 or late 86. I know where you are coming from though, my 62 was produced in Dec 87.

Hey Poser,
How do i get some of that Surly Beer? That stuff sounds good, and it would be needed to help lubricate the onset of this project!

I mentioned this because the bellhousing for that year is set up like the (up to I think)79 which uses the bell housing to keep the tranny in place. The fj60 does not use this set up. I merely suggested he could use the 60 bell housing and tranny cross member instead. But if Chris has an alum. tub it really does not matter for the hole unless he really wants the fj40 tranny vs. the fj60 one. both are the same except shifter are in different positions. ;) It's time for a beer, anyhow, sorry for the mix up:)      ...a six pack that is.
