Hello all,

This is my first serious dive into the Land Cruiser world. I have the opprotunity to pick up an 86 HJ60 that needs the engine rebuilt. It seems to be a naturally aspirated diesel and the engine is apart. The PO says the problem was a knocking. Here are my questions...

1. Where can i find gaskets and parts besides the dealer?
2. If it was a rod knock, what else should i look for?
3. From my very brief description, what other comments might you have?

Thank you for your time,

Jeremiah

1 There are a few places in oz that mail order anywhere in the world.
http://www.gwengineparts.com.au/website/parts1.html

2 Look for damage on the crank

3 Fully price it from different angles. Machining and reassembly combined or they machine, you assemble and with/without Toyota rebuild kit from dealer.

See what parts are not included such as water pump and thermostat.

Check the machine shop have the latest equipment like lazer guided cyl boring.
Ask them how many 2H diesels they have done before;)

Look at getting the pump checked and new injectors to get the best performance and economy. It will also be cheaper and easier to do it now.

Also a good time for a new clutch and flywheel machining if its a manual.

New engine needs a new cooling system so dont forget the radiator and hoses.

Allow extra in your budget, dont expect it go smoothly all the way.

Thanks for the info, the more the merrier. I just want to make sure i dont dig myself a huge hole...

When I had my 2H rebuilt a couple months ago I got almost all of the parts from Dan at 4x4 Auto up in Edmonton, Alberta . . . . (866)468-2570. It might be cheaper though to get them from Australia - I was kind of in a hurry. It wound up costing about $4000 with parts and labor (that was with having most of the parts overnighted though). Hope it goes well for you.

Buy only quality parts and Toyota gaskets. Some shops sell cheap parts and these are usually made in China and India The metal hardness and dimensions are not compatible to the quality Japanese parts or original Toyota parts. Some aftermarket parts actually exceed Toyota's parts so find them out. If you buy the cheap parts expect to be back here inside 12 months telling us what went wrong. Ross mentioned the machining. There is twice as much work in rebuilding a 6 cylinder diesel as a gasser so expect to pay that if you cannot do it your self with mates. Everything needs to be measured accurately, pistons, bores , journals, bearings, rings, ring gaps, thrust etc etc. The pistons should be replaced, the oil pump tolerances measured up and the rocker arms inspected for wear and machined also the cam needs careful checking as they tend to wear. And every thing is dam heavy. LOL. goodluck.

Yeah the parts that I got from Dan are genuine toyota parts - they came from australia - I ordered them from him because he had them in stock in my hemisphere:) I ended up getting a few more odds and ends from industrial toyota dealerships too. Probably was more like $4500 - thinking about it. Well worth it though - drove it across the states after breaking it in - got like 25 miles per gallon all the way. Unfortunatly right now it is sitting because I need to have my fuel injectors rebuilt too . . . .but one step at a time.

This post hits close to home as I'm just finishing up a long rebuild on my 81 BJ42. I guess prepare for the worst and hope for the best. My rebuild needed a new head, pistons, sleeves, one rocker arm, remachined cam shaft. Its going to be a $4000 USD rebuild by the time its over but worth it. I was able to save some cash on what appears to be a decent rebuild kit (time will tell). Advice given to me through this forum is look for companies that offer 1 year warranties on parts. That seemed to help weed the poor grade stuff out there. Good luck.

Oh, I forgot to mention. I opened my 3B up as it also had a 1 x rpm knock. Fuel economy was great, compression in spec, oil analysis suggested nothing wrong but I couldn't stand that knock. I removed the oil pan only to find a nice chunk (1" by 3") of piston skirt off the #4 piston. Ouch.

NNAAARR, We all know 3Bs don't do that, ROTFL.;  ) Tough little buggers aren't they. :D

Thanks all, this is awesome info. Now that i have some idea of how thin my wallet will be... time will tell if i can take the project or not...

WHerlWind and PressOn - what did you spend in parts? I will be rebuilding myself with a local shop doing the machining (they have done a bunch of toyota heads for me, he is very prcise and i still need to discuss this with him).

Thanks again all.

Jeremiah

Here in Panamá I spend around 3500 - 4000 USD in parts for rebuild not head included and clutch parts included ..

If you gonna do .. do it well one time.

Rebuild kit fromGeoff Walsh in Aus. was $675,00 AUS plus shipping $120.00 to $285.00 depending on how quickly you want it. Kit includes pistons, rings. BEBs and mains, gasket kit and thrust bearings. For the heads I was quoted about $400.00 plus whatever parts were needed. $70.00 to pressure test head if needed.A local B.C. quote for parts was about $1400.00 not including the head.
I didn't go through with it at the time and ended up finding an 87 HJ60 with 100K on a rebuilt 2H with a new clutch for 3 grand instead.

why waste your 4 + Grand on an In-direct , find a 12HT rebuilder instead i reckn , you can only do so much in power gains with an In-direct ( pre-combustion or swirl chamber ), plus turbo diesels are way better in power & economy than "naturals"( non forced induction )plus naturals have more weakness's , altitude is one. you just have to look at most performance diesels these days whether in cars or trucks , etc to see whats best !

Just my opinion

I'm doing a 13BT build soon , i could have gone 1KZ-TE but it was In-direct and i definatelly don't want to waste my time with one .
