Hey,

I have been working on swapping a 3B out of an '85 into an '84 BJ60. I realized that the bellhousings were different, but didn't think the actual block was slightly different as well. So right now I have the '85 3B sitting in the '84 with the cast bellhousing. Can I just put the '85 aluminum bellhousing on the tranny in the '84, or is there any other differences that I should be aware of??? I noticed the engine mounts are different, as well as the power steering pump and bracket.

I am no expert.
But I know there was a 3B and a 3B-2

Some call it a 3B II
Maybe try a search?

You could always move the transmission too.
Could save you some headaches.

Cheers,
Nick

Unfortunately the tranny in the '85 is in need of a rebuild, which is one of the reasons I thought I'd throw the engine in the '84. Also the '84 also has a better body.

The block on the '85 3B is just slightly different. I think it may just be the two lower bolt holes... maybe just one of them, where it is a smaller threaded hole vs. a non-threaded larger hole on the '84 block. Just four bolts holding on each bellhousing, so I guess I'll pull those off and compare things a little more closely before I drop the engine in again! :)

I thought the only diffs were vacuum shift for 4Hi in 85. Does the 85 tranny sit in diff location? Are the driveshafts the same in length?

Yup, the '85 has the vacuum stuff. I know the crossmember is different. But I'm going to be totally ticked if the tranny itself is different. I should have some time tomorrow or Saturday to check it out.

the tranny is the same for both years.
the 3B for 85 is a different engine (fine tooth timing gears, more cam bearings, etc but the engine deos just bolt in, swap all the mounts from the 84 onto the 85 and use the cast bell housing...(i beleive this is what i was able to do years ago when i did this swap...)

Thanks for the responses. I pulled the engine out to have a better look, and it turned out that the pilot bearing was all broken apart. I also found that the blocks are also the same in terms of bolt pattern, and the hole in the block that I thought was threaded, was actually just full of crud!

In this case it was probably a combination of oil and dirt :)
