I am almost done with putting my FJ60 back together. But need to make sure that I have the proper pre-load set for both the Knuckle and Wheel bearings, as I don't know what they should be set to. As I would like to get this correct so that I do not have to take my FJ apart again for a long time. As I have Pulled the thirds and put thirds with 4.11's, and I have finish re-torqued my lift in the front, and changing my tie rod ends.
Any help or link to what the preload should be will help.
Thanks,
Yoda85

For what?

5lbs and a 5dollar fish scale..?

nonsense. here's the procedure (you have an FSM, right?):

Tighten nut to 43 ft/#.
turn wheel back and forth.
Tighten nut to 43 ft/#.
losen nut till hand tight.
retighten to 60 inch/# (NOT ft/#!!!)
test preload, it will almost certainly be in the correct range.
add lock washer (star washer)
add lock nut (outer bearing nut), tighten to 58 ft/#

reinstall locking hubs

cheers,
J

So Jan-78FJ40, what is your procedure for accurately figuring out steering knuckle bearing preload without a spring scale?

:meh:

Tighten down the nut to get the bearings seated per FSM.

When you get to making the final tightening on the wheel nut, you want it tight enough so you can *just* move the thrust washer side to side with a screw driver. That is a fairly good ballpark setting. Trails new Tech Editor has used that for years.

sorry, yes the fish scale helps of course. However, the response was clearly completely insufficient for the guy asking the question.

Just a hint:

Knuckle bearings and wheel bearings are not the same thing...
