Hi all , new to this site but and I hope this is the right thread for my project , I been planning to convert this to all Toyota diesel but the Toyota 1kze is a lot to do like electronic and computer control , wiring is not my thing so my best bet is Mercedes om617 all mechanical . I have seen on line lots of people do this swap because I think its simple and cheaper easy to maintain and probably the most reliable Engine ever build ,of course don't give me wrong Toyota as well. but yes there would be a lot of fab but I think I can do this hope I can get some info here , I post in a different forum but I'm having a problem posting it that is why I came here seems easy and simple . anyway this is my truck that I am going to put a Mercedes 617motor in it ..

Thanks , the adapter I made it myself out of 7/16 steel plate cost me like 65 box plus my time , 4x4Labs adapter is cool but I could use those extra cash for my build , I will use the same original transmission and . The 22r is good motor but it’s time to let go . Uh this is one of the thing that I have done F/R ARB locker installed .

. Lol that’s what everyone says to me after I made the changes to this truck If you look closely you can tell , this is a xtra cab truck I custom made the bed people think it’s an overseas model but it’s not , I cut the rear section of the frame and move the axle forward 20inches cut the front of the bed about 19 inches in the end looks like an Aussie ‘s bed ..this is my flywheel installed .

Very cool. Where are you located? Looks like a great place to be! And don’t sweat the Merc engine. The Banderante trucks built in Brazil were Land Cruisers with Merc diesels.
 
Looks good. The no fleetside bed throws you to import.
There are very few true 2nd gen 4wd hook beds.
Yes that's one of the reason why I restore the whole truck , I used to have an 85xtra cab EFI but after I sold it I regret it big time, so I was looking for 2nd Gen again and this I found on craigslist all stock unmodified never have an accident never been wheeled second owner , this time she's ain't going nowhere , to bad I don't have the picture during my restoration didn't know I will end up here , yes the bed is probably not too many were made for north American , but the rest of the world has it surprisingly they still make it until today , my 1989 HILUX 4wd 4dr has a bed hooks ..

Yes thanks I think the 617 is one of the most reliable engine , yes you are right a lot of truck power by this motor in brazil and other part of the world they use it for taxi , this engine are capable of 300hp easy without internal modification , in Europe they are probably a decade ahead of Diesel Tech , sad when it comes to Diesel we in the US are the third world .
 
I made some progress today I just finished making my cross member and my custom bombproof transmission mount , I will remove it later to finishing up the welding , my engine mount is done and the engine is set , so the motor has to come out again and I will make the fuel line , I have to rip off all the gasser line because is too skinny the diesel has a bigger fuel line , this is what came last time my brand new Holset Hx35 ..

I was able to finish fab the Toyota accessories Brackets, as you can see all are going back to the same spot like the 22r is all I need to do is reinstall and plug it back in . I also finish up and installed my home made transmission mount , I raise the transmission 2 inches and I have plenty of space for my radiator, move the motor as far back to the fire wall about half inch and the hood close just fine .

Last month the first picture send my injector pump to this company and they send it for me to Bosch at Sweden for rebuilt and upgrade to a high performance injector . the 2 and number 3 picture in the box is my new rebuilt performance injector pump..

Looking forward to watching your build, and seeing what mods you do to get performance. I did a similar OM617 swap into an FJ40 with 85 Toyota running gear a few years ago. The biggest challenge was the oil pan clearance.

Its a big job but it looks like you are off to a good start

Sorry guys , I been sick in days now never get a chance to work on my project , but anyway my turbo is not HX35 sorry it’s , HX30 and yes they are 99% bolt right in you just need to loosen the band and realign both intake manifold and the turbo , you just need to grind a tiny bit part it the intake manifold and the other thing is BenzForce is the company that did the upgrade of my IP with the Holset HX 30 combo and maybe 15 psi boost 250HP easy , and if not enough with intercooler add on 300HP not problem .
