Just getting into my frame off resto. Planning on going through my axles, put in lockers, seals, bearings, etc. I am pretty sure the '84 had 30 spline birfs. question is, how strong are these compared to the chrome molly ones out there. Ultimate plan is to have a really nice looking BJ42, turbo'd 3B that can occationally go off road (hopefully without the risk of wrecking it).

Only you know how you will drive it. Anything can break if you bounce it around hard. To me, if you have a really nice bj42, then one of 2 things:

A) you have a lot of money so fixing an axle will not be a problem OR
B) you have put a lot of time and effort into your cruiser, so chances are you will think twice before bashing it.

Besides which, even if turbo'ed, you wouldn't be able to deliver excessive power to the axles without being in demanding (AKA risky to your rig) situation. If it were me, I would wait until the resto is done, then see if it fits in the budget if it is still a concern. Good luck, and start a build thread!

with tpi 350pc , 35" krawler and arb, with stock 79 birfs, never break one in 4 year , im still amazed and fear one day it will happen , so plan is to go chromoly soon and be done with it, RCV or TG, i just dont know yet ,TG are china i suppose but are lifetime warranty , cheap and come with hub gear and drive flange .
i admit that TG got interesting product like the axle seal ,hd ball wiper and trunnion bearing eliminator, maybe RCV are better or nitro ,so many option :hmm:

no need to open this :worms: just need to know opinion of people who use and test different brand product over the years

Hi all,

Your stock BJ42 axles are fine, and parts exist to upgrade them if you want to run really big tires. Stock disc brake front axle Birfield joints are 27 spline at the hub (from 1976 - 89.) There are aftermarket upgrade CV (Birfield) joints with 30 spline at the hubs (Longfield Super Set.)

All CV joints are at their weakest when the front wheels are turned all the way in one direction. If you keep this in mind, you can keep those stock Birfields alive for a long time.

Regards,

Alan

Simple question ........ what size tires are you running?

There's absolutely no need for aftermarket axle shafts and birfs unless you're running 35s or larger and playing in the rocks.

when I put a front diff lock in my truck I would break a birf every trip I went out on, I put a set of 30 spline longfield chrome molly axles and birfs in 7 years ago and haven't broken anything ever since

Apples and oranges. The OP is running a resto 3B powered 40 and plans mild occasional offroad usage.

You're running a V8 and most likely much larger tires than he is .........

Thanks guys,
I was thinking that many of the broken birfs were maybe coming from V8 and higher modified trucks out there. Plans are only 33's, but am thinking of putting in a Air Locker in the rear and Aussie or similar in the front.
I pulled apart the original axles, everything looks great (for 350km), so new bearings, seals and going to keep orig axles for now.

If you're going to put an ARB in the rear, then I'd highly suggest you save your pennies and run the same unit in the front. The select-ability is hard to beat. It's the only way to go.
