the CV; miss the CZ
mainly hang out in the 80s section but did some brake work on the '83 ol girl pickup & she also got a used lx450 master cylinder as a hand-me-down
Pickup had leaks in rear cylinder & front master& since the original master was leaking & had switched rears to disc AND wanted to put new master in the LX first it made sense to go this route on the pickup
she may not be the prettiest gal at the party but she hasn't quit on me yet (well there was that time with the old carb & then that time with dead igniter - but that's all water under the bridge:)
Neways the LX450 got the new aisin master cylinder and the pu got the used one - after a good cleaning
Bench bled both masters & still have to bleed the system/s then will test & see if it's a good match

This is a kit i got from lil shop mfg.
The kit simplified a lot. It includes calipers (w parking brake option) brackets & hoses.
don't know if allowed to post link here but a web search will find them
Yes they use parking brake cable.
Had to figure out how to get extra couple inches in length tho. Used long threaded bolt already had on hand & one M8 X 1.25 x 25mm long female/female connector (5 in set so 4 extra). One pic of center bolt makes it look like it's riding on driveline but it's not.
Had to home-brew the cable clip mount further back on each side but center-bolt extension freed enough length for cable to reach brackets at rear on each side.
First two pics here show different sides. The caliper mounts to the rear of axle.
My pickup is long-bed. Lil Shop has a separate longer cable set available but wanted to keep that part original & was already pushing the whole economics idea of the conversion😑.
Also replaced axles seals & bearings🤓.

I plan on using 2002 Tacoma oem 15" rims.
Had to do a "little" grinding of calipers to clear inside of wheels. Super close fit but will see how works out.
One part not comfortable with is no hub extension at present. Trying to figure out so lugs alone do not take full lateral load/s.
But close observation shows original setup of axle hub does not extend into center of original 14" rims anyway🤔. I realize compression against axle face at play. But it's still all on the lugs🤪
I know later Tacomas had "taller" center hub but think axle swap would not work due to slightly longer axles.
I believe '84-'88 axles would work (oem axle replacement part # for '83 is now superseded by later '84-'88) but don't know if center hub standoff is any taller on those later axles. I'm talking 2wd here.
Or maybe i'm over-thinking this & shouldn't be an issue?

I have done ZERO experimenting with rear discs. I have many of the parts needed to do a full float rear axle. I'd love to install rear discs but the parking brake is always an issue. I don't like the driveline brake option.

I see FROR has a kit that uses FJ Cruiser calipers with the drum/rotors but Its EXPENSIVE. If I ever see FJ Cruiser rear brake parts used I might grab them if affordable and see if I can fab something up. Until then I think I'm running my rear drums. I was just surprised to see this kit you're running. Good to have other options to think about.

On '83 original master both lines are on fender-side. On LX450 master forward fitting is on top. Had to bend line for that one to work & thought that would be one to give me most trouble. Turns out it was lower fitting further back that was a pain. It leaked overnight and a close look at first pic shows the bad. That fitting is angled & I buggered the threads. Had to wait for tap to fix threads on master. Die was no go for male end of the brake line so did just the female fitting on master.
Looks ok one hour later. Will let sit overnight with foil & paper towel underneath before replacing lost brake fluid🤞

Just the original factory solid rotors for now but those have been wonky & too easily susceptible to warp. Would like to switch to vented rotors once have figured out which ones can use.
I’ll be keeping an eye on what you do, I’d like to start this conversion once I get my new wheels and tires on.

I don't have measurements at the moment but can measure later and based on what I found can give you feedback regarding wheel clearance for this kit. (before you pull trigger on new wheels).

I already got new wheels

I already have the wheels and tires 👍🏿
17”x8” , -10 mm offset, 4.1” backspacing

even after grinding still had contact at calipers (at first thought it was parking brakes binding but they were fine) so tried 8mm spacer each side and it finally cleared
then found not enough length on studs & so used arp 100-7715 studs to get length - had just enough space to wiggle in the longer studs
want to use these lug nuts & should have enough clearance at fender so think 15mm spacer each side should be good

So while researching 15mm spacers tried bleeding brakes but had issues w rear bleeders. Couldn't find 3/8" so used 10mm and had to really crank down on them but they kept leaking until finally thought had them taken care of. But still had spongy brake pedal. Went to napa & got a set of napa speedy bleeders part #675-1566.
Can see difference in pic. New napa speedy bleeders have larger 7/16" head & had wrench for that (meanwhile found 3/8😑).
Little Shop recommends clocking bleeder valve to 12 o'clock while bleeding for best result. Didn't want to go through trouble of removing caliper for that so put pickup on driveway down slope, blocked front wheels & jacked up rear to achieve same effect. Worked out good. Could see air bubbles come out while bleeding brakes. New bleeders sealed good and solid pedal feel now.
Now just waiting on 15mm spacers to get on the road.
