80's better then new Jeeps?

I don't take issue with the vehicle, the Jeep is a hugely capable vehicle in the right hands and modded correctly.

What I take issue with is the "Bro" mentality that seems to go with it. Just like all the doctors and accountants that like to play dress up and pretend to be 1%'er MC members on their store bought Harley, the Jeep mentality seems to share the same ignorance and arrogance towards anyone driving anything besides their marque of choice.

In fact, I see a whole lot of Jeeps running around with huge HD stickers on them- case and point.

Just like the Harleys, I bear no ill will towards the machine just the low brow mentality behind the wheel of too many Jeeps that never see anything more challenging than a gravel road.

I like associating with riders who use their bikes for more than posing, and Wheelers who aren't afraid to take a few chances and maybe dent something- regardless of what the badge says on the hood.

Diff locks will cause a lot of chirping. On Sedona's trails, I don't know where you would need them. VS. a locked, lifted FZJ80, it's prolly a push. A JK or rubi in capable hands would smoke an unlocked 91. I would give any 80 a considerable edge when it comes to reliability.

To the PO: I would not base jeep capabilities off newer-than-newb drivers in rentals just like I'm sure no one here wants opinions of the LC/LX based on observations of a bone-stock model driven by their "accountant".

FWIW, the biggest violators of the "bro" mentality I've seen are the new FJ guys and their pimped mall cruisers (flame on, if necessary!). Every group has "those" guys as part of their following.

I have a TJ and a LC and love them both...both kick ass...both communities (online) are great. Mud is one of my favorites of them all.

When you're talking about general maintenence items, likely not. When it comes to hard components like frame and driveline, definately.

I would agree. I have own Jeeps all my life until I got my 80. My 05 Rubicon on 35's was way easier to drive on the trails than my 80 on 35's. Getting to the trails 80 all the way. I found that the trails I like the 80 is the winner just on comfort, room for gear and passengers, and that I can sleep inside.

I have only met good people in the Jeep and Toyota communities. I find on the trails everyone is friendly no matter what you drive. Only issue I have ever had was a Land Rover that didn't stop when I was in the backcountry of Big Bend N.P. I had my hood up fixing a broken battery tray and the Rover just cruised on by. I wan't stuck or in trouble but I thought it was strange not to even ask if I needed assistance.

I agree 100% and would be virtually impossible for anyone to argue this. But at a 50k MSRP in mid-90's dollars, I would hope so!

From my experience in wheeling with jeeps they do wheel better....when they dont break a u joint...Maybe not the JK's or one's with dana 44 or 60's but def. the others. I have always been 100% Toyota though. Also I have to add I would def take a new JK that's for sure. $30k-$60k compared to $5k-$10k is a big difference though.

I have limited experience when it comes to the Jeeps. For one I was seriously amazed at how little power the jeep's engine effectively has. For a car with a 3.6 V6 and weighing less than 2000kg it should be a freaking rocket! Its not the case..

The new Pentastar motor is pretty darn amazing - drive one! If that isn't good enough you will soon be able to bolt on a RIPP supercharger in an afternoon to get Hemi V8 power.

I love my LX450 and plan to never sell it ... but if it burned down tomorrow I would start looking for a late model, low miles Unlimited Rubicon. It's the closest thing to a Series 80 that is still available new here in the USA. Or I would just wait until I could buy the wonderful 420 ft lb diesel model:

We dont have the JK's here in Venezuela.

Although I have driven one that belongs to a cousin of mine who lives in Colorado. It has the 3.8, we drove from Boulder to Moab (and spent a couple of weeks driving around in it) and I was seriously not impressed, it felt like it had 140 horses instead of 205.. very weak. My previous 90 series prado had a 3.4 V6 with 180hp and felt like it would leave that JK in the dust, even though it had with 25 horses less than the jeep and weighs 2500lbs more.

That Pentastar, however, sounds appealing. 285 horses is impressive.

And that diesel with 420ftlbs of torque sounds incredible, THAT should be a freaking beast.

Also, I have been to some of the world's great crap holes. Seen plenty of Cruisers of all generations...Not so of the Jeeps. That has to say something.

Love my 80, it is apples and oranges in comparison to a Jeep though. The 80 has more luxury, more room (hauls all my junk i.e. stuff), more comfort, heavier built, less breakdowns while on trails, but it also takes more room on the trails (longer and wider), takes more fuel getting there, harder to see while on the trails...

If I want the feel of a Jeep I take another alternative...I drive my 40!

Not cheap, but 50k in 1996 dollars is about 75k today. This is about what a new 2013 LC costs...probably not a whole lot of people here in line to fork that kind of cash over. At least, not this guy!

I have also been to many of the worlds great ****holes and have seen the same. Could be attributed to Toyota's much larger share of the foreign market though... I did become a fan of these first when I saw them all over Kuwait and Iraq!
