Does anyone out there have two stock springs for an 80 they'd be willing to sell or give me? Are the rear and front springs different? I was considering trying to use them to beef up the springs in my Chevy LUV utility trailer. Maybe with an extra set of beefy springs under it then it wouldn't get unstable with any kind of load in it. How long are they unloaded?

i'll check mine when i get home... i was keeping them in case i ever wanted to transfer my lift to another vehicle... but theoretically it would have stock on it if i wanted to move mine over...

you know airbag helpers aren't too bad (sub 100 for the rear of mine IIRC)... jsut another consideration?

I'll have to look into the airbag helpers.

Assuming a LUV would have leaf springs, if you put coils under a leaf spring trailer wouldn't you need a panhard rod for lateral stability? Or would the coils be in addition to the leafs?

The coils would be helper springs. I'd leave the leaf springs in place.

Marc, I have some stock springs too that are just sitting on the shelf.

I would like to see that installation. Sounds like quite a project.

You don't think I could just tack weld the springs to the axle housing and whatever sheet metal is above the housing?

When you've got a couple spare minutes, can you measure how long they are so I can see how close that number is to the space I want to put them in?

Another thought I had was simply replacing the existing leaf springs with some beefier ones. But I don't have any idea about spring lengths, widths and other important considerations. Maybe Jon could help me with those details since I know he did quite a bit of spring rework on Da '40.

On Da'40 I used stock width springs, but had them made 2" longer and the sping pin relocated. I think I still have some springs at home. Maybe 4Runner fronts and rears. I seem to recall Ash took my FJ40 stock springs. You are welcome to them. Mounting new hangers to the trailer frame shouldn't be a big deal.

Yup, I still have Pappy's spring so you can have them, just let me know.

Somewhere I have a leaf spring calc that may help you come with a spring pack suitable for the trailer. Let me know if you want it and I'll hunt it down.

.

End of coil to end of coil is about 19 1/2 inches. that one is the RR coil.

Thank you. I'll measure the gap with no load and see how it compares.

I think beefing up the leaf spring pack is an easier option. Now that you mention it, I might do that to my little trailer too, which was made from the back end of a Nissan PU. It's pretty wimpy...

Pretty wimpy would be a compliment for my LUV trailer. Technically it's my father's trailer but I paid all the money for the lights and the registration.

Front and rear springs on the 80 are different and left and right are also different. Both are way too HD for a LUV trailer. You should look at coils from a much lighter vehicle than an 80 or beef up the leaf spring pack.
