80 Series Steering Box (3 Viewers)

GDay Everyone.
I have put a seal kit in my 80 series steering box. The steering box has sealed beautifully with no leaks whatsoever but there is about 50 to 60mm play in the steering wheel. I have adjusted the adjuster screw and locking nut on the box which is would all the way in to reduce the play to what I have now. It does appear that the play is somewhere from the shaft into the top part of the box. I can move the steering wheel left to right before contact with out the wheels moving. The bottom section of the box to the wheels has no play. I have inspected all tie rod ends etc etc and none these have any form of excessive movement in them at all.

I am currently at a loss. I fitted the Terrain Tamer seal kit and had this problem. Thought maybe I had lost a bearing in the process and got hold of a few more. I now refitted a new Terrian Tamer kit and tried again. I found I wasn't missing any bearings at all sand did job according to the you tube videos and to the manual. A Max Ellery manual not a Haynes or Gregorys. Can not adjust any further than what it is. Does anyone have any ideas? Is there anyone in Perth preferably south of river that anyone knows specialises in 80 series steering?

Most of the play typically comes from the input section, not the sector shaft which is what the adjuster shaft/nut contacts. The input section bearings should be adjusted to have between 6-13 ft/lbs in/lbs* of preload. Toyota does not consider the input section to be serviceable, so manuals don't address it.

If you're finding you have to screw the adjusting screw in quite a lot to try and remove "play" then it's possible your gears on the sector shaft and/or the power piston are worn. I've been doing quite a lot of research on recirculating-ball Steering gearboxes and if the gears (teeth) are worn you'll never really take all the slack out. Toyota state 40mm of play (or less) at the steering wheel is acceptable (not in my opinion!).

New sector shaft and power piston will make those gears/teeth contact perfectly and you will have absolutely no play, but it's not cheap!

A few power steering shops will re-grind the power piston (as the teeth are "rack cut") and replace the sector shaft as these teeth are hobbed in a specific way which can't really be repaired.

This is the answer, especially if you rebuilt it yourself and likely didn't get the locknut and preload correct

Thanks for the responses everyone. I've been crook for a while now so only getting to do the job tomorrow. Yes sick for 6 months now. Adding to that family and uni commitments.
The video Danny G shared is spot on. That's the exact problem explained perfectly. I'll be doing this tomorrow.

Just an add-on in case preload does not resolve your issue (it didn't in my box).
The input section, the part shown in the video connected to the power piston, is as @nukegoat stated not serviceable. There are o-rings inside there that are not included in any seal kit and cannot be refreshed. These wear and allow fluid to cross between the in and out ports (hi/low?).
Also, the balls wear and become under-sized. Add to this the worm screw in which they ride will wear and become over-sized. Together these clearances caused the play in my box.
That entire input section is replaceable and available in the event that preload does not resolve your issue.

Also recommend at least one of these as the head is a shallow hex and easily stripped out when removing and replacing.
