Wayne has indicated in another thread that 80 series e-lockers could be swapped into an HZJ73 (LSD), were it not for the fact that the 73 system is 24v... My question (to Wayne or others) is this - how much current do the lockers draw? I have a 40amp step down converter that isin't being used. Could my converter possibly supply 12v for a set of lockers?

Thanks,

Peter

Dunno how much current the lockers draw, however it won't be up around the limit of your converter by a long shot imo.

Your rear axle is FF?

You would need the long spline front inner, and long spline rear axle shaft in addition to the locking 3rds. Likely the rear will be the same as the cable locked BJ74, however the front may well be HZJ specific. Without access to EPC I can't tell at this time. We have all in stock, except the HJZ front if it ends up being different then the BJ74 front long spline inner.

Hi Greg,

Pretty sure my rear is FF... It has protruding hubs and LSD.

I'm very interested in what you have on offer. Busy today buit I'll PM you tomorrow for details and price. If you can figure out about the front end that would be fantastic. I'll do some research.

Thanks,

Peter

hummm, unless i am mistaken i was told the front doesn't need the longer shaft nor the rear since it is the elec and not the cable we are chatting about...
cheers...

Ya, thats tickling some memory strands. Do you recall the tread? Someting about the inners being the same number for all after 1990? That would be great news, and I would love to have been reminded and corrected.

Thanks

nah, i wasn't sure either that is why i asked...
i do beleive it was in regards to the PZJ70 and installing the elec locker up front but then the locker i had was 12V so i didn't bother...

Didn't bother...? With the install?

Are there reasons not to install (12v) 80 lockers in an HZJ73?

Thanks all,

Peter

Peter, if you knew me you would know i hate elec work so a detroit locker went in and the elec lockers are still sitting under the bench...
want them?
;^P

anyway, the locker is running fine with the tractor tires and the bush truck will probably never see much road so a selectable is not needed...

So, has anybody actually swapped e-lockers into a 70 series truck? I'm getting the impression it could be done - in theory...

How 'big' of job would it be to do the conversion - any speculation?

Would the electrical be that big of an issue?

Wayne: I've pm'd you about those lockers...

Thanks guys,

Peter

i had a e/locker int he back of a 45 i had, it was easy enough but the elec i didn't like... you might already have the harness run along the frame to the back so all you MIGHT need is the harness from the frame to the locker and a switch up front...
who knows...
do you have a semi floater rear or a full float? never mind i re-read the opening post...
unless i am missing something, it looks like the same axle are used for FF open, LSD and E/lock...
anyone see something i am missing?

9" elock or cable = the (coarse teeth) cog locks the axle shaft and the carrier - long splines needed
8" = the (fine spline) cog locks the planetary gear and the carrier - splines don't matter

Thank you denis. Your knowledge base and participation on this forum is appreciated by many. Keep it up.

hummm i just checked all the part numbers for FF rear e/lock and non e/lock for Japan and for Europe and the same part number for all.
hummm, interesting...
so is the 80 series all the same rear axles?
anyone else have a different part number for the e/lock axle shaft?
