80 or 100 series as storm chaser

So I am watching some of these storm chaser shows and I see them with like chevy tahoes and suburbans. Why not a Land Cruiser? I would think that they would be way better. What do you think. From a tech point wouldn't they be way more reliable?
 
More interior space, cheaper, bigger engine makes it faster on the highway. Storm chasers don't need the most durable vehicle on the planet. They want something fast that can drive over some debris on the highway.
 
I vote 100 series. The V8 power will be an asset.
Solid front axle and lockers of the 80 unnecessary.
 
The 100-series looks better doing "fast action" IMO... Something about the sleeker design and independent front suspension.
 
To all of you who have drove a 100 series, is the V8 that much more power then our straight 6ers. I dont know I have never had the chance to drive a 100.
 
The phrase "Chase Vehicle" just shouldn't ever be used to describe a 80 series Landcruiser.

Our family has both, and I can say the difference between a 2UZ and a 3FE is insane. I drive with SUCH a lead foot in the 100-series...

Well i've never been in a 100, but in a tundra the difference is phenominal.

No comparison. Once you hit the higher speeds on the freeway, air resistance will make a tundra/100 series marginally faster than a 80, but down low around town or on an onramp it's like a rocket compared to the 80. It also feels a lot less like it's going to fly apart once you get close to that redline.

Additionally, I've even seen a 2UZ go to 350,000 with the only replaced parts on the engine outside of regular maintenance being a single injector. No top end work, no bottom end work, and he doesn't baby it around.

The VVTI on later years also seems a noticable bit faster than the other ones, but that's probably all in my head. The 5-speed is what's really awesome, shifts damn fast and damn smooth.

VVT-i (or any variable valve timing for that matter) will get you quite a bit of extra horsepower plus a higher redline. On the 2UZ it boosts it from ~230hp to ~270hp.

Well I know it increases high-end torque through extra breathability

but without seeing a torque curve there's no way to see if its just a little peak at the end, or a large range of power improvement. Simple HP@RPM figures dont actually tell all that much.

What we need is just some 0-60 figures for same model-tundras from 2000-04 and 05-06...
 
Id buy some fast cheap econo box , MadMax it out with all kinds of weld-on s*** to make it safe from flying debris . When it dies your out only a couple of grand to build the next ride
