OK, I've always known the 80 series frame was really overkill compared to other brands. The fully boxed frame from end to end sets it apart from other brands. However, the inside is equally as impressive. I removed all the suspension components on this frame for use on another project. At each frame mount the frame is double thick on both sides. 4 layers of steel and these tubes are welded in to keep it from collapsing. Check out the tubes and layers at the steering box. No wonder Cruisers don't have cracked frames at the steering box like a lot of domestic pickups do. Not too often would you get to see the inside of a frame so I thought I'd share a few photos.

You sure you're not confusing this with cracked torsion bars on the diesel 100s in OZ? If not, details please...

Off the top of my head I don't remember. It was on the 80s cool list.

Sure it wasn't cracking C pillars from roof loads?

As well as the C pillar, mine has cracks around the steering box mounts. Although they are only on two of the holes not all and they haven't grown in the last 10,000km. For intrest the suspension is standard and I have 336,000km on the clock. It's a 92 model. 1hdt

Thanks for the insider pics.

Whitey, the pillars of the roof(the pieces of metal holding the roof up in between the windows) are labeled from front to back A,B,C,D. The ones on each side of the windshield are the A-pillars, the ones beside your shoulder when sitting in the front seats are the B-pillars, the ones beside your shoulder in the 2nd row are the C-pillars and the ones on either side of the liftgate are the D-pillars.

Thank you Ary! One more tid-bit of useful info!

Now, how can you tell if they have cracks?

GEN I and II Mitsu Monteros also used fully boxed frames.

Why can't the domestics do the same?

wow, looks like an f150, a rover or numerous other stuff out there. Those are just "crush tubes".

There are pics floating around somewhere. I'll post them if I come across them. With our white rigs, the cracks should be fairly easy to see. The problem used to be only with the older rigs 91 - 94, but some newer rigs have reported issues.

Check along your C-pillar to see if you see any cracks. You might need to open the rear doors (2nd row) to get a thorough look.

Better yet, check out this thread...

Got cracks.

Looks like everyone else, very very tiny on PS, bout 1/2" on DS with light dusting of rust.

Truck does not appear to ever have been abused. Original owner was a dot-commer from Los Gatos and the second owner who I bought it off of was just a commuter from Aptos who only saw some forest fire roads...

I think the roof rack was used for skis in Tahoe.

Like I said, another f*cking problem to think about and right after I bought my new rooftop tent.

Perhaps I should have just stuckwith the 40.

Lets see, things to worry about on my '80:

HG
PHH
C Pillar
Birf
AC
Front & Rear seals
O2 Sensor
Leaky rear windows
Transmission Solonoid

etc, etc....

Frustrated
