80 belt replacement for a idot (1 Viewer)

Take 'em off. Replace with new belts in reverse order.

A better question should have been, where is the pivot bolt on the alt. Do you just loosen bolt on the side of the tension bolt or is there another bolt to unloosen.
 
Make your life MUCH easier, remove the battery and battery tray and it makes the job a snap! Especially if ya have large hands!
 
Please do not remove the battery and / or tray. No offense to anyone. It's really a waste of time and effort.

Start by removing the front skid plate. Then loosen the AC belt tension lock bolt. Then run down the AC tensioning bolt. Remove the AC belt.

Loosen top pivot locking bolt and tensioning lock bolt on alternator. Then remove the front curtain from your front driver's side wheel well and shine a light in there.

You will see the head of the alternator tensioning bolt. Put a twelve inch extension on your wrench and loosen the alternator tensioning bolt. Remove the belt. Make sure and loosen it all the way so that both belts come off and go back on easy.

Put the alternator belts on and and tighten from the wheel well in increments. Do not over tighten. Without a gauge - press on the belts and they should not have slack over 1/2" with firm pressure.

Then reinstall AC belt. Same tension.

For each is own! I did it and it took me less then 30mins to remove it and change all of the belts, all without getting on the ground once!

I have quite large hands BTW and removing the battery is a waste of time - unless - and I may have overlooked this - your truck is stock and has no lift.

On the other hand I can't see this being needed even in a stock truck.
 
Again - no offense, but you cannot get to the AC commpressor belt lock or adjustment without getting on the ground under the truck. You cannot replace the alternator belts without first removing the AC belt. Please do share.

Trying to work from memory here, but i am 99% sure i did it all from above and mentioned how in a previous thread.

Oh well, whatever works for ya i guess, the easier it is for YOU (or anyone else) the better. I was just sharing my .02

Do it the easiest way possible by all means but, you cannot get to the AC compressor belt except from the underside - sorry folks, but that is reality....

Go with me here. I'm just f*&kInf with you man...I really like his early stuff. I'm old. I used to see the Ramones, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, etc. live at the CBGB and other places back in the 70's and early 80's.
 
Forgive me Father for I have screwed up.

Do not remove the alternator belt tensioning bolt. Loosen till you can remove both belts. Getting it back in is a a PITA. Sorry for the misdirection.

um, i hesitate to say this but you can get at the alternator adjuster bolt pretty easily if you just undo the 3 bolts that hold the ps pump reservoir in place and move the ps lines out of the way. It is easier with a 1/4" socket but a 3/8" wll work fine.

remove the battery and tray.

it'll save you time and pain.

the damned adjustment screw is in the most f:censor:cked up spot to reach unless you remove the battery.

It's, at most 15 minutes of work that will save you an hour, at least

The read the procedure in the FSM 3 times.

It should do the trick.






If you don't have the FSM, well then...shame on you!
