Just found an oil leak at the connection where the PO hooked up a direct reading pressure gauge. Apparently, the original oil pressure sending unit went bad and someone installed a gauge tubed into the interior. They apparently either didn't know metric or just didn't care, but it was fitted with an SAE thread, and cross threaded into the metric outlet. It only went in about a turn, so I don't think the total thread hole is damaged beyond tapping it out. I would like to restore this system to original(esp since it is leaking) Any one know the female thread size for the tubing coming out of the engine connection? (I've got a plug installed the same size as was in it just to keep the oil in)

Should be the same as on my B-diesel.

Not even metric actually.

It's 1/8 inch BSPT (British Standard Pipe - taper)

28 threads per inch

Thanks a lot. Hope I can find this pipe nipple locally----

Tom,
Thanks again for the info. I have found a supplier for the BSPT pipe nipple-they're Ft. Myers Automotive. They are going to have the adapter here in the A.M. I'll find out where they got the part and post-in case anyone else needs the source. Seems amazing to me that there are still folks who recognize the difference in threads--these folks were very accomodating, and took the time to look for the part.

Oil Sending unit

By the way, can you unscrew the large fitting to retap the smaller female hole if the new part doesn't fit?
I would also like to see a pic of your B.

This is one big fan shroud.

The fitting came in today and it's installed-worked perfectly. The British Std. pipe-taper can be found at Plews & Edelmann--www.plews-edelmann.com.
All tubed up and oil changed. The tubing has a tee for the original sending unit plus a tap for the direct-reading gauge. The pressure came up to a good 50 PSI on the direct reading gauge, but the dash cluster gauge initially came up to ~3/4 of the way, then slowly dropped to zero, and actually buried itself so I couldn't see the needle anymore. I think there's a thread on checking the cluster gauge somewhere on the forum, we'll see. By the way, I like the color of the B--my 77 is similar--

Glad it worked out.

Very nice F there too!

(I guess I'd better not call it "an FJ" because I found that gets some people here upset.)

Don't know why--that's what Mr. Toyoda called it-- an FJ-(40)
After I got all the parts installed, the cluster gauge didn't work(see earlier post)I used Rudi's test and found out the new sender I bought is bad. May have been sold a sender unit for a light rather than a gauge-will talk to the Auto Parts place to confirm.
That is a very large fan shroud--any reason why?

Apparently for some, these have taken over the use of the term "FJ":

Not for me though.

There are very few modern "FJ cruisers " in this country because we're mostly too poor to afford them. (I couldn't even afford to buy this model .... Instead I won it! :D)

Seems to be just a B-series diesel thing..

Here's another shot of my 1B:

Wow! Those are clean.
Now I've got another project---
Turns out the auto parts place sold me an oil sending unit for a light, not a gauge(I had a suspicion--). Thanks to Rudi and his extensive knowledge, I was able to pinpoint the problem. Got the right one on the way now.

Yep. IMO Rudi is one of the most knowledgeable people on MUD on the subject of our electrics.

Thank you, thank you.

Or come on over, uplift another of our valued national artifacts, and sneak it home with your baggage....

(I believe that mustard one is living in the USA even though it was sold new in Cambridge New Zealand.)

(It's all good really. We steal your corvettes, mustangs and the like .. And we probably started doing this sort of thing first. :D)

Finally got the correct sending unit--wow, it actually works! Thanks to Both of you folks for all the insight.

I'm glad that the/your problem is solved.
