Hello Fellow Mudders, :flipoff2:

First off great forum you have here, full of useful tips, friendly banter and some quality Cruiser Porn.

I hesitate to start this thread without actually being in possession of my 40, although she is on her way, all be it from 1500 kms away (Close enough to 1000 miles)

The story starts in typical fashion, Landcruisers are a familiar site here in Australia although not a typical choice for a 17 year old's first car.

My 1st was a '75 FJ40 was purchased site unseen, in parts, on my 17th birthday by my father. A former Aircraft maintainance engineer, with a loose understanding on what constituted as purchasing my first car for me on the condition of moving 500 kms away from life long friends several years prior.

The following few months were spent in a tiny garage desperately trying to learn what went where (thankfully it was mostly..all there) getting the 2F running, and getting it to pass inspection. Of course my father was a big help in all this, part of his plan I suspect, and we grew closer because of it.

That was my daily for almost 3 years until a work issued hilux intervened, and the 40 was sold for to fund a overseas trip.

Several years later I happened upon a rather nice 65' that briefly entered my possesion, but was sold rather quickly for the usual suspect....:princess:

Enter 2015....quite a big year for our family, I will be 30 in September, our first baby arrives in October, and my father turns 60 in November.

After almost 12 years now working in the family business we have been able to grow enough to have a little time to find a distraction and my father and I decided it was time to work on another 40 together.

Circumstances have certainly changed in the past 12 years, we now have a rather large facility with a
workshop to wrench on the 40, and loose plans were made on buying a lift, a few more Airtools and shipping out some parts from our family's spiritual home of the US of A.

Epic Fail there trying to get my image to work on the post.

Here is where the next 40 will be leaving from today, along its 1000 mile journey.

Not a lot of info on this new 40 coming up from Tasmania, looks like it's had a cheap respray at some point, buying sight unseen can be a little daunting, but for the grand price of $3200 delivered it wasn't that big a punt to take.

Here a few images I have.

Looks like a very nice deal to me ! Pics from the cabin ?
Unfortunately no, not a single cabin picture. I did have a front on image which has been lost, I do know that I will be spinning Bezels as soon as it arrives.

Before anyone asks, my username denotes the two best buds I have...

What I do know:

- 1977 model
- Seats have been recovered (unsure if this has been done properly or not)
- A rather recent respray it looks like
- Engine is running on 5 cylinders and will need a tune-up and probably head gasket once it arrives

What I do NOT know:

- Condition of body, how much bog is in it, if the frame is rusted out etc etc etc
- Km's/ miles

Initial Plans:

We have a family camping trip coming up in September, still rather cold here then, but its a family tradition and would like to be driving the 40 to that.

- Assess the condition of the body, hoping there isn't too much shoddy work done prior to that suspect respray.
- Engine assessment and general service for Road Worthy Certificate
- New Tyres, Wheels and brakes
- Remove frog stickers from each corner window

My initial question to the mudders:

Do the Stock 15 inch Steelies (US spec) with hubcaps fit on our Australia FJ40's? As I believe there are some differences in our brake set up and our wheels were 16 inch from factory.

The welded 15" will mount right up... If you are going to purchase these new ... They are the welded type for disc brakes

Don't like the 16" splits?

I went out if my way to get a set many years ago... Glad I did... More tyre options these days

Welcome to mud :)

from the pics looks like you have something decent as a starting point ...your buds will love riding in a 40 ... welcome to Mud and the disease, madness, religion, addiction ... lol ...

I really like the look of the 15" wheels and hubcaps with 33 x 10.5 width tires.

Thanks for the welcome!

The disease set in long ago!! Thanks for the welcome!

Welcome to Mud...it does look like you have a good starting point in that '40! Hope the rest of looks as good as the rear pics promise. Since you and your dad have already done this trip once, you both kind of know what to expect. I've had mine for 17 years and loved every minute driving it or working on it...it is an obsession, no way around that! Good luck on your trip(s)...the '40 rebuild trip, and the camping trip later this year!!

looks like you have a good starting point! i'll be looking forward to your updates. Being in the outback at least you have all the goodies available to you in the backyard. looks like it already has a full floating rear axle. perhaps it might be a good candidate for a diesel?

Thanks for the Welcome Skip. Looking forward to making many old rusty things, new and shiny things.

We do have a fair choice here for diesels, What would be your choice considering the availablity of pretty much every toyota diesel engine here in Australia?

That is a nice looking truck. Clean panels, the rear looks great(you need to add some blankets in there for the 2 guys that will dictate where you will go--(Odie and Hanks))

So far looks like the PO has done a fairly shoddy paint job, was running on 5 cylinders until it died just after I got it in the workshop. All electrics are working, brakes seem good, time to get her running properly, throw on some new tires and wheels and head off for an adventure before she gets the full treatment.
