Built an exhaust out of 2.5” mandrel bends with a two chamber flowmaster i had laying around. Tucked it up above the frame. Sounds pretty good, but still a little on the loud side. Might switch the muffler out at some point.

Also got the blower motor and wipers working too. All it took was cleaning the switches out with contact cleaner.

Also got it registered and insured. Driven it about 100 miles around town with no issues. So much fun cruising around town.

Also, installed my custom sound bar. Lol

Question, I have the original wiper arms and blades which are in good shape aside from the rubber insert rotted away. Does anyone have a good source for just purchasing the insert?

Scored a second hand bestop and doors so I can drive this thing during the winter. It’ll hold me over til I can acquire and paint the hard top and doors I’m getting from a buddy.

Drove it yesterday to run a bunch of errands and pick kids up at sports. Ran it out of gas, so that was fun. Next on the list is to get the fuel gauge working. Lol

Built a rear seat belt bar and installed 4 points in the back for the kids. Didn’t want to weld on the original roll bar so I used bolt in tube clamps. This also allows me to adjust the height as the kids get bigger.

Also installed a tach and discovered how little these engines like to rev. 3500 and she’s all done, lol. I’m so used to the 1uz in my 4runner that bounces off the rev limiter at 7800rpm. Aside from that, I’ve just been driving and enjoying the hell out of this old rig.

Had a buddy that’s a wizard with carburetors help me dial in the Holley 2300 2 barrel that came with this rig. Re-jetted, changed the power valve and adjusted the idle mixture. My first time doing this with a proper A/F meter and what a game changer. We also dialed in the timing. The result was a much snappier throttle response and it will actually pull past 3,000 rpms (it was super rich before). Last pic is of my “shop” situation. Really need more space in a bad way.

Sweet score.

I really like the seat belt mount. Did you buy the tube clamps somewhere? I was going to start on my version of that this weekend but now you have me rethinking my plan of how to do it.

Also on my mustard 40
Thanks! I ordered the tube clamps from summit racing. They worked out perfect and go with the look of the stock roll bar.

Thanks for posting that. I actually got home and looks like my seat is too far back for a bar like that to work. Back to plan A.

Sure thing. When I mounted my seat it was a balance between leg room and cargo seat space behind it. Got lucky on the seat belt bar I guess.

Yeah same. Since cargo space was pretty much non-existent anyway I opted for maximum leg room. I plan to take some lengthy road trips with the kiddos so I have an m416 for storing all the gear. I did make my seat brackets so the seat can tumble forward when not in use.

I have enjoyed viewing your thread and look forward to seeing you out and about. I live around the corner in Rocklin. When you begin the fun journey of passing CA smog, I am happy to stop by so you can view the wonderment of factory smog equipment as a possible point of reference. Mine is a bit different (1982) but it might be helpful. Keep the posts coming, great story!

Thanks! I actually handled the smog thing a few months back. I am however, working on another 76’ fj40 for a buddy that’s going to need a smog and has most of its equipment. We’ll have to link up at some point. Still getting it roadworthy. I’ll make a build thread for it soon.
