After looking through the different options I think I am going to copy what you have under the hood and will ditch the snorkel long term. I like the way it looks, but I am trying to get the truck drive-able again, then will start making it look better.

I pulled the circular adapter off the carb intake this morning and saw that it is completely coated in soot...

Well, whatever you do don't try to clean it with carb cleaner. The Weber has many materials unsuited for a chemical onslaught, the idle jet o-rings being one of them. It sounds like you have had an intake backfire.
