I’ve got oil puking from what appears to be between the flywheel and the front of the oil pan.
assuming it’s the main seal. Gonna be a costly job, anything else I should have the mechanic deal with while he’s knee deep in there?

I tend to replace throw out and input bearing any time the trans is out.

I’m sure this is gonna sound dumb,
but I just got this ‘71, and it has a 4 on the floor tranny. I don’t think it is original (the engine is).
if I need parts for it do you know how to tell from what years will fit it?
were there many choices for putting a 4 speed with the original engine?
im afraid I don’t know squat about FJ40.

That is a great set of questions! For someone else…. I have yet to do a 4 speed swap for myself so can’t help with that part.

You may also want to check the gasket and seal at the trans input shaft. Your leak could also be coming from there.

there are 2 different clutches that could have been used, the original 3 finger clutch or the later diaphram clutch.
you will need to remove the bottom cover from the bellhousing and look inside or take a pic in side and post here to know what style clutch needs to be ordered.

are you sure it is engine oil? are you sure it is coming from between the flywheel and block?
there are other areas that I'd look at also:
oil pan
side cover
valve cover
if gear oil front input seal on trans
