Hey all,
new to the forum, tried searching old threads to find the answer to this but no luck, could have something to do with my computer skills.

here's my question:

i have a stock 1985 BJ70, hoping for an OME kit in the near future here, and trying to decide on new tire size from 31-33.

anything anyone can give info on is much appreciated, fuel economy, handling, any other experiences you've had with different tires on a 70 etc...

i'm staying with all terrains, just needs to get me around in the city and on logging roads etc so no need for MT's. i'm pretty much broke and so mostly wondering if going up to a 33 from stock size is going to break the bank for diesel economy, or if it wont change it too much.

any info much appreciated! cheers

1985 BJ70 - 32" : my average since january : 12,3L/100km (w/very cold outside temp and hot outside temp) . Best : 10,7L/100km - Worst : 13,7L/100km.

Handling : as good as a BJ70 can do with bigger tire ;)

Experience : bigger the tire are... bigger is your power lost. Bigger than 32", you will lose your 5th except on highway.

If you go for the 33" tire... get a skinny tire like BF A/T 33-9.5-15.

How about running OME and 33x12.5 with a 3F engine... too much? im running 32x11.5 rite now, but thought it might look too small with the lift on...

PD. Im 2600 meters above sea level, so my car isn't really a rocket anyway!

I have a 255/85/75 (33x10.5) BFG mud terrain (winter tire is the same size) on my BJ74 with 4.11s (and H55 5 speed)

Its about perfect for power (with a turbo) and gear ratios.
Has good of craw ratio, and good highway.
Its not a rock crawler, nor a sports car.
But a very good balance for inbetween.

Good on the hightway, and good in the offroad.

Cheers,
Nick

My old FJ73 ran 33x12.5 15's on 15x8 rims with 4.11 lockers front and rear (mechanical, not airlockers). Used to do fine in pretty much every circumstance with the old 3F donk. Would happily hold 110 on the highway and could crawl, just didn't like going DOWNHILL in lowrange Petrol engines have no compression braking :/
