Hey guys,

I've been procrastinating about installing a pyro in my LJ78, and i figure i'd better get one in there before its too late and i crack another head.

I was wondering if anyone had mounted their gauges in the empty DIN slot under a DIN sized aftermarket stereo in their 70 series dash? My prado had a stereo installed when i bought it, and there is a plastic peice covering the extra space where the original stereo was removed. Is it possible to find pyro gauges small enough to fit in there? I'd like to install these as cleanly as i can, and not just slap them up on the top of the dash.

Wayne, i noticed in another gauge question post that you had installed one in that location. Do you happen to have any pictures? Did you install any other gauges in their as well as the pyro?

i have wicked plates made up to install 3 2" guages in the slot below or above the radio...
cheers

Mech water temp eh? Ok, what i was thinking was A pyro to watch the EGTs so i have something reliable to watch to make sure i dont cook the engine. Would a Mechanical Water Temp gauge be telling me the same stuff? Would it be redundant? I mean, if the pyro says i'm running hot, wouldnt the water temp just say, "yes i agree, you are running hot"? Is it worth having both?

no the 2 systems are completely independant of each other, you could be running 1600F EGT and the water temp be normal or you could be running 1000F EGT and have an over heated cooling system.
my suggestion is run the pyro, boost and water temp gauges and increase your boost to 14 lbs. this helps drop the EGTs and gives you better performance...

Pyrometer gives you quicker and realistic feedback of exhaust temperature and its important when you tune up your engine, dont forget to put air pressure gauge also to your exhaust manifold.
Its also important when you boost up more than stock, :) and guess what?
If you put bigger exhaust pipe than original, your exhaust pressure might rise...
