70 Series on an 80 Series Chassis ? (1 Viewer)

There are a number of reasons I am looking at 80 series frame swap:
- The 80 series Frame is way stronger than the 70 series frame
- The ride of the factory 80 series geometry is going to be way better than a converted coil 70 series chassis
- parts availbility on an 80 series are OEM and readily availble
- A bit more width is not a bad thing
- 1HDT engine ( although I can fit it in the 74 frame )

That said I am not 100% in on the concept having only done 40s onto 80's previously I am just trying to decide as the 74 sries body is more comfy than a 40 but still has enough character to put a smile on your face.

I would say they make a kit that uses 80 geometry so you don’t have to figure it out. Trail Tailor has one for 60 series and pretty sure they have one for 70s. That takes care of all the factory support…I guess for springs or bushings ? Isnthat want you mean?

Personally unless you are straight hammering on an older 70 frame, I think it’s a moot point. It’s plenty strong

1hdt fits fine :)

You can absolutely use 80 series suspension/axles without having to do the frame swap. Even a diy cutting stuff off the frame and welding it on.

Personally unless the 70 series frame is rotten, I would just swap coils/axles rather than a much bigger project with the 80 frame.

Depends on your location, too. Cutting and welding different suspension onto a frame is fairly easy to do in the US, but somewhere like Australia it might require all kinds of certification and paperwork. With regards to width: both 70-series and 80-series hub-to-hub axle dimensions are readily available online, just look up the difference and see if the tire stick out would be little enough to cover with reasonable flares.

I actually disagree and am going to shorten a 80 frame to put under a 73 instead of doing what I did with my crawler and put 80 series axles under the 7x frame . When you wheel it the forces on the welded on brackets and supports are very strong , I never had a weld that let go but several spots where the metal close to the welds just gave up .

The 70-series frame is more robust and I would argue stronger. I have cut both 70 & 80 apart and compared them side by side.

An 80 frame is not weak by any means but to say it is stronger than a 70 frame is not correct.

Cheers

TT do not make a kit

Interesting, I will have to go back and measure again but I thought the cross section of the 70 was very similiar to the 40 which is way smaller and thiner than the 80.

I would bet the 80 series body shell is substantially stiffer and reduces a lot of chassis flex on them

THE main improvments that you will get using a 80 chassis is THE coil suspension.
AND a bit of stability with wider axels .
All THE rest are futile things .
From a legal Point of view can’t say any thing , as I am in Europe !

Just my 2 cents

Yeah that would be a 60 series kit not a 70 series kit

Hay all i have a little different question regarding a 70 series. I'm looking at potentially swamping a 70 series frame under a 60 series body. does anyone know if the body mounts are anywhere close to one another. or am i causing more work than it is worth. my 60 has some frame rust so this is just another option I'm looking at. I did some searches and did not find anything on this type of swap. this struck me as the most appropriate place to ask. thanks
