Drivetrain aside, I don't think I'd choose a particular 70 series based on parts availability. A lot of parts interchange. They may not be 100% interchangeable but maybe 80-90% and with some tweaking, can work. The FRP 73/74 top, Troopy top and all the various roofs might be tricky to replace in the US but if you've damage those beyond repair.... well,:meh:

Actually over 3000+ possible variations in its soon to be 40th year of manufacture.

Likely the most “modular” vehicle ever manufactured en masse by a modern automobile company.
That is incredible. I believe it, it takes a deep dive to decipher all the engine/model/trim codes. That book looks awesome too. I might have to order it. I just have this one - it's good but a little more general:

This site also has a ton of information. It's how I found the various wheelbase differences.

Someone really spent some time putting that together, wow. I love the Doctors without Borders technical

Not online.

But if you read these things called books and have the time and some $$$ to pursue it… 200 pages of more than you’ll ever want/need to know about an industrial toaster….

Dusting this thread off to avoid making another one.

Currently have an hdj81 but shopping for an HZJ73 to add to the garage.

My main concern is 70 series body parts availabilty: (specifically front fenders for a 93). Are these hard to come by? Kicking around the internet a little and doesnt seem to be a lot out there.

Also the 12v/24v topic. Are ''most'' rhd 70 series platforms 24v?

Currently looking at hzj73's and looking for one a little rougher around the edges as a budget project, but dont want to shoot myself in the foot here.

Anyway to tell if its 12 or 24 via photos? The japan auctions are very vague and most of the time you are unable to reach a seller with specifics.

Fenders are readily available around the globe.

Get a 12V version if you can. 24V parts are getting rarer and rarer.
New 24 volt parts might be getting rarer but the 24 v parts seem to last forever as I have boxes and boxes filled with good used ones . Biggest difference is that most of the 12 v markets where tropical and toyota wiring harnesses don't like that plus most of those got hacked up pretty bad on top .
