low profile?

Mike's site says for the 60 series flares they are 'low profile' 1/2". No question they look nice. But my 12.5X33's on the back stick out 1.625" from the fender.

I need wider - how about others?

As for bouncing off trees, as we have a few here on Vancouver Island, I would go with Schedule 40 pipe which is the common solution here.

these will be close to factory sizing...
about 2" wider than stock. these are true flares.

they are not the same as the 60 series. the 60 series were designed to fix the rust issues with the CND 60 series.

remember this is marine grade fiberglass, not that cheap over the counter "pretty" fiberglass. Mike goes overboard on everything he makes.
example:
on his way home from work a deer jumps out onto the road, instintively Mike veers to miss the deer and hits the ditch at 80 k/h and lays his fiberglass cruiser (everythign fiberglass, doors, hood, windshield frame, hard top and sides and of course the tub itself) right ont a rock. back on his wheels and the only damage is a fist size hole in the front fender and the delamination of the hard top side.

now try that with a metal cruiser and see what kind of damage is done.

to me, the Xenon flare is perfect for flexability (but i do not know the product) and Mikes flares will be tougher than steel and look factory.
seriously, i was extremely doubtful the forst time i went to work with Mikes products back in 97-98. since that first truck i have been sold on his fit and quality of workmanship.

to be honest, Mike can be a PITA to deal with, deadlines push off again and again, he has an attitude that can eat at you but if you persist the frustration is worth the product. he has never let me down with what comes out the door. his work really is amazing.

you have to remember, as Bruce said, his cruiser stuff is built from passion as a cruiserhead and must be fitted in around his (extremely busy) full time yaught building. those of us that have his products can attest to the art he produces.

at the end of the day, it is your money and your application. i am just offering an option. i will take a set to fill the number, whether i ever install them is another thing. i have no intention of making any money off these first orders.

will they fit a 77-78 series? not sure. if you still have the 70 sitting there take a template and see if the rear wheel opening is the same profile. let me know.

fiberglass bounces off of trees and rocks? Since when? I thought something made out of the same material of the Xenon flares would be indestructable. Probably will not fit on the rear of a 78 Wayne?

I've been running fiberglass fenders on Agent O (BJ42) for over 7 years. Bought them second hand. They look brand new after bouncing them off trees and scraping them on rocks. A trip to Walker Valley saw the fenders wedged up against a boulder - the metal on the bottom of the cowel bent and the buckled up fenders remained unscathed. Wouldn't have believed it but I saw it..and have the bent up metal to prove it.

what would be realistic time frame be then?

realisticly, Lowenbrau has put a 6 month time limit on his offer to purchase.
i am seeing Mike tomorrow to pick up some parts and i will discuss it with him...

most importantly is the serious confirmation of 10 sets, that will be the start date.

I would rather have damaged the flares:meh:

Make sure they have the notching cut out for the gas door;)

if Mike makes them they are built with all the dips and divits needed.

most on here know that if someone makes or sells crap, i warn the forum. if i brag a company or person up there is a reason. they are good at what they do.

Hey Wayne,
Just looking at the two it looks like they have the same arch, the only difference is the closeness of the rear door openings to the fender area, so they would have to be like a two piece design similar to the 80 or 4Runner. So, unless they are short in height, I don't think these will work on the rears of the 78 and probably not on 77/79?

well, not enough interest so this idea has died.
cheers

It would probably work better if a vendor bought X amount and sold them as needed.
There will always be someone looking for a new flare

Factory Flares

Just got a quote from Japan4X4 for a set(4) of 70's factory fender flares at about $2100 (Can) plus shipping. I will keep looking ...

too bad we didn't get enough interest...

Not having read the entire thread, but there are other options out there from Japan than OEM.

PM me if anyone is interested in any aftermarket ones, I'd love to help!

Have you tried wreckers? If they are that hard to come by on canada try some aussie wrecking yards, should be a few around. I sold my factory front flares a few months back for aroudn $100 the pair with all the brackets etc for mounting.

I dont know about them being "thin" though, mine were around 3-4mm thick and pretty strong. The front one I did put a hole in without cracking it due to grazing an embankment. The rear snapped though after getting hooked on something, a rock or ledge. Though they did take a good beating for stockies. I have moved onto a flexy rubber flare now though. Nearly covers 12.5 wide tyres with a 60 series diff in the back.

Ok, I am not one to complain about prices but that is crazy, and I have a hard time buying factory ones when they want $800 USD for a set of 4. Gees someone is paying a premium.
