I just returned from a camping trip in southern Indiana, and had zero issues with transmission on very hilly terrain. That being said, 15 minutes from home the trans temp light came on then went back off as I pulled into my driveway. The engine temp was running around 195 on the aftermarket gauge, and it was very flat road for the last 2 hrs. I have done the Rodney flush, and replaced with synthetic. I checked fluid level and all was good and not burnt. I have a temp gauge and cooler to install, just didn't get it done before I left. My question is, is there anything else I should be checking for here? I do have all stainless exhaust that is fairly close to the tranny, could that cause extra heat in the transmission? The rig has 260k on it and the transmission was rebuilt by Toyota @ 170k. Am I missing something, or is it headed for failure? Thanks all...

Not much to say. Just install the cooler and don't worry about it. What else can you do.

When my 62 had stock gearing and stock tires the light would occasionally come on after long hills during long drives. I installed a cooler and had no trouble until I went SOA. The 35" tires and the 4.88 gears are too much for the old trany and its been slipping for over a year but still drivable.

Point of the story; replace the fluid when you put in a cooler and all should be fine.

I had the same issue when I was filiming in southern AZ and the added cooler cured my issues. You can't really get all the fluid out of the tranny safely without a lot of work, just if I remember about half of it. I instead just changed it every 1000 miles or so and figure at this point its mostly new.

Last time you pulled and cleaned the filter? Mike

Heat can transfer from t-case to transmission also. Check gear oil or tranny fluid (which ever you decide to run in t case). It seems to turn into a 50/50 discussion on preference of gear oil or t fluid.

I just cleaned the filter with the fluid change, about 5000 miles. I will probably change the fluid after heating up though. The transfer is in need of rebuild, so it may be building extra heat. And the light did only stay on for about 10 minutes before going out. It has not come on since, and still functions the same. So, hopefully a fluid change, gauge and cooler install, and t-case rebuild, should get me some more life out of it??

You should get plenty of life out of it. Mine has overheated 10 times in the last year. I have been doing passive flushes and babying it. It slips but is still kicking.

If yours is not slipping then you should have no reason to worry and it should last for awhile.

Thats what I like to hear. I doesn't slip at all, I just have no experience with Toyota transmissions, now a turbo 400/350 you have to really try to kill (experience on those). Thanks for all the input, I'm learning the way of the Toy, slowly..

Put the tranny cooler on.. I tow a dirtbike trailer up through the grapevine to Hungry Valley Recreation area and that is a steep, long climb.. Many cars overheat.. My FJ62 tranny light never comes on. I run a Hayden tranny cooler and I use that super expensive Industrial Castrol synthetic tranny fluid, I can't think of the name right now.. Of course, my FJ62 also has low mileage.. Here is a link to my DIY regarding the Hayden tranny cooler.. I hope it helps.. Good Luck..
