It's generally said, and seems to match my experience as well, that even accounting for the age difference, 80 series rigs seem to hold up a lot better rust wise.

Does this seem to be the case? What exactly is the reason? Are the panels on the 80 series thicker? Is there more rust proofing? Or different fender designs?

My dad bought a 3 year old fj55 in Utah that had rot.
Our 80 is still 97% rust free. By the time our 60 was this age it had been rusty for a long time, despite the same use case
 
Been discussed a lot in the past, do some searches on rust-proofing your vehicle.
