There seems to be a little confusion on bellhousings. The late model ones for diesels are all ALUMINUM alloy.

There are three manual transmission systems (all split type transfer case) that bolt to 6 cylinder gas and diesel engines.

#1 the H series, A CAST IRON transmission which include the
H42-- US delivered 3.55:1 first gear both long (extension housing on back end) and short
H41 -- 4.8:1 first gear both long (extension housing on back end) and short
H55-- the typical cast iron 5 speed loved by many and parts supported in North America.

#2 The R series aluminum case
R141 a four speed
R150/151 (15x) a 5 speed . Delivered in 70 series units, similar to other Hilux/Surf/Supra transmissions.

#3 The H150/H151 series, also aluminum case
used in station wagon 80 series and 100 series and the post 2001 70 series HD-FTE engine.

bellhousings part numbers of note.

31111-60230 is a Jan 1990-July2000 1HZ bellhousing for #1 H
-Since the back of the block is the same this also fits the HD-T, HD-FT, and HD-FTE and PZ engines.

31111-60241 is PZ engine one for the bi flywheel --#2 R.

31111-60321 is Aug 1999-up HZ --#2 R.
-Since the back of the block is the same this also fits the HD-T, HD-FT, and HD-FTE and PZ engines.

31111-60250 which goes to 60300 is the 1FZ engine --#3 H15X.
--these later sub up to 60301 and 60302.

31111-60290 is 1HD-FTE 70 series --#3 H15X.

31111-60210 is the 80 series HZ/HD-T --#3 H15X.

Since the numbers are not even close, the 1FZ engine (gas) cannot accept a diesel bellhousing. There is no way other than making your own bellhousing for the 1FZ engine to accept a cast iron (type #1) transmission.

(please correct me if the HZ bellhousing does not fit a PZ, it is my understanding it does)

What you wrote is a little confusing. The HZ/HD bellhousing for a cast iron (H55) is not itself cast iron. The HZ bellhousing is alloy. It will fit a PZ engine without a doubt but the pilot bearing would have to be a custom piece to get the H55 to mate up.

Anyone aware of the differences between these two housings??
I want to Fit an HZ to a H150 gearbox but can only get the 31111-60290 housing.. will this work?

31111-60290 is 1HD-FTE 70 series --#3 H15X.

31111-60210 is the 80 series HZ/HD-T --#3 H15X.

Not sure what the difference is but they're effectively the same. They mount the same box with the same pattern to the same block. There might be some casting or fork differences - get the fork to match.

Cheers Wedge

Yes they seem very similar, good point about the fork, i was more worried about the starter clocking or actual clutch position, but the 60290 is all I can get so I'll take the chance.

Yeah I'd take the chance. There's a lot of talk about converting 105s with FTEs and people always say use any (as in HDJ79, HDJ80, HZJ80 or HDJ100) 1H* to H15* bellhousing, and never any talk of starter position issues etc. People generally say keep the fork to match the bellhousing but I haven't tried interchanging either

Ja, I took the chance Wedge

I have not stripped the 76 yet, but eyeballing it out, all looks good. The housing is the same width as the R151, 20CM , they use the same fork part number and the clutch slave is in a very similar, if not identical position , Clutch plate will be a FZ 275mm plate.( they came in both 300 and 275). 31250-36494.

From all the pictures I looked at, it seems as if the difference is is down to two inspection windows on the top of the housing, which the -60290 does not have. The -60290 also has a vent on the top which would flood the clutch very soon if you dunked it, but what the hell.

Checking out the VIN on the donor vehicle, it was unclear if I had the H150 or 151, but the clutch plate mentioned above is a 14 spline, so it looks as if I am getting an H151, which I am happy about.

Sounds good mate, all th inspection windows are good for us losing their plastic cover and letting crap in anyway... with your vents - you could always blank it off and fit a breather if you’re worried.

Good idea in the clutch -I wonder why people go to the hassle of fitting an Isuzu plate instead of fzj. You could still be getting an h150 - here the hdj79 and vdj79 utes got them with the bigger bout shaft. Essentially they just have a lower 1st (and maybe 2nd?), but very big as strong. I would’ve thought with a 1hz you wouldn’t mind the lower 1st?
