Peaked in on the machine shop today. They did a nice job cleaning her up. Very pleased so far.

An overzealous buddy suggested I get a qoute to have the ports (Intake and Exhaust) polished. The machinist talked to me a little bit about this, explaining the process and work involved.

My concern isn't necessarily cost. What I am concerned about is benefit. Would having the engine ported & polished be a significant upgrade? Will I even notice the change?

Are you talking the 2F? A light port/polish will help. Don't let them do a V8 job. Your head will never see the flow.

i did a port match and polish on my 40's V8 when i rebuilt it. spent $50 for the abrasives kit and 2-3 hours per side (that's 4 cylinders per side). it's very easy to do if you are not looking for a racing type port. i can't speak to how much it helps, mine wasn't running before i did it.
what i can say is that stock head castings are very full of pits, globs, and imperfections. i was amazed how much. it smoothed the passages out quite a lot.

Rory,

The porting and polishing will benefit you someday when you/if you install a forced induction system. Otherwise, you'll simply have a very efficient intake while the other half of the equation, exhaust system, remains inefficient. The cost/benefit ratio for a land whale such as ours isn't all that great I'm afraid. As far as doing this yourself, I wouldn't suggest it as you can *easily* ruin a head by taking too much material out of the runners. Additionally, the 80 heads are pretty well port matched from what I can tell.

There's only so much a guy can do at the beach, staring at the scenery while enjoying Mai Tais.... Glad you are making progress with the roof. Put the porta power to good use!

Poor Ali. Such a tortured life...

Did some researching, and some cost analysis, and decided that $500 could be better spent elsewhere. Like sliders, shortbus bumper, more lift, 4x4 Labs rear bumper, Inti roof rack, and.... you get the point. So thanks for the info and for not flaming my newb a**.

All for $500! :D

Oh yeah, that reminds me...you can buy a 4x4lab bumper A La Carte so your $500 would actually get you two side pieces and one main center part then do your own welding and finishing.

http://www.4x4labs.com/gallery/bumperbuild. Someone on Mud posted the cost for each individual pieces; do a search for that one.

Back to my drinks....
