Hi.

Is a 5.9 cummins in a pig a viable option? Weight and power vise.

the main reason I ask is because I really want a diesel in my fj55 but the big toyota disels cost an arm and a leg over here and I don´t think there is a single 3.9 cummins over here, but 5.9s are abundant :)

so, am I crazy to think it will work on a 55 drivetrain?:grinpimp:

What is your primary use going to be?

I would run a 12 valve non intercooled cummins with a NV4500, split case, and stock (30 spline'd) axles if I knew that it would never see a heavy right foot or large tires. That engine is pretty damn heavy, and makes great low end. Once you step up to upgraded axles you might be a little safer.

Beyond that, I would definately beef up the drivetrain, just in case.

I've often thought of a ISB powered 55 pick up, with eaton front and rear axles and a hell of a hitch. Bomber.

Good luck!

EDIT:
Wait a minute- I take everything back (memory laspe made me forget what 44" tired 55 belonged to whom). WHEN (since you shouldn't not do it) you go with a Cummins 5.9L, you should go with a 1-ton drive line. Complete from flywheel to all 32 lug nuts. Between deep snow, 44" tires, and a 5.9L, I wouldn't want to spend any more time than I had to fixing broken parts out on the middle of a glacier. :)

if you search on pirate there is someone who has done this. i think he had some problems with the length and radiator/ fan fitment. he was very happy with it's performance last time i checked.
HTH, carl

I know I was being a tad optimistic :) just wanted to know if anyone had done it.

by the way what´s a good 4bt going for? and what´s the best place to get a good one?

has anyone bought from these guys? http://www.arsco.com/cummins.htm

Great lead on rebuilt 4bt cummins

These 4btcummins are rebuilt here in Denver, Colorado.
This is a Quote from another website.
(My name is Russ, and I live here in Colorado. I have engines available for sale. They are Cummins 4bts, automotive applications. 105 hp. They are total rebuilts, and I stand by them!!! The engines are going for 2200.00 with no core charge. If interested, you can e-mail me, or contact via phone 303-564-6545. Thanks.)

That price is decent. But, those of you looking for 4BT's, his motors may not come with the flywheel or the ring adaptor to mate to GM trannies.
Flywheel: $750 from Cummins
Ring adaptor: $650 from Cummins.

Having a Cummins powered Cruiser: priceless.

Just thought I would give a head's up on some of the hidden costs.

FWIW, Proffitts Cruisers has 2 4BT's left for sale.
Call 1-877-PROFFITT for info.
