In my roomates 62 the 4wd light is stuck on and it seemsto be engaged, driveshaft is turning w/out hubs locked. The switch seems to be working cause when pressed we can hear a clicking coming from the dash. What should we do to get it unstuck?

do a search. i recall hearing this problem before. something about a vacuum switch getting stuck. it's either on the fire wall or under the dash. you switch the lines around and it'll "suck" it out of "gear".

It is a vacuum operated sytem, using solenoids that are on the firewall, toward the passenger side. These sometimes fail. Switch the hoses around and it will switch out of 4WD. Of course you have to do this with the engine running, since you need vacuum.

Next advice, my canned FJ62 spiel: join the 3FE list and peruse the accumulated knowledge on the 3FE website. Go to http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/3FE/, go to the files section, read the introductory welcome message, then start reading all of the stuff in the fixes/lessons learned folder. Send a message to the list introducing yourself. Search the 3FE archives at http://www.birfield.com/archives/ for specific questions. We have discussed the vacuum system there many times and there is lots of info, including how to get cheap replacement solenoids.

Buy a Toyota Factory Service Manual. Get the 1989 or 1990 Land Cruiser manual. About $67 plus shipping directly from Toyota Publications, 800-622-2033. The best spent $70 you will ever spend on your Cruiser. Other manuals (Haynes, Chiltons, etc) are crap in comparison

I just went through the same thing on my 62. For my fix, I went to the junkyard and pulled a solenoid off the intake of a '92 Corolla. It was not a direct fit for the existing bracket, so I made one out of a piece of scrap metal. The electrical connector was the same, but you will have to trim a tab off of the connector to make it fit. Attached is a link to a thread with some good information and a picture of what the solenoid looks like (it's located on the firewall, passenger side).

For now, to get the light to go out, you can just switch the vaccum hoses from the bottom solenoid to the top one.

Forgot to mention that the best part of my fix was it only cost $5.00 for the junkyard part. Good luck!

Regards :)

If your room mate didn't service your t-case recently, it might be solenoid valve under hood.
