Well, I'm still doing research regarding buying a BJ, but I am getting really close to going for it. One thing that I can't figure out though...Why would Toyota build such a strong rig...strong frame, strong axles(except Birfs), strong engine, optional cable lockers and then not have a 100% lever shifted transfercase???? My concern is that the vacuum actuated hi4 could freeze up due to water or moisture getting in the lines. This happened to me on an old jeep that had a vacuum disconnect on the front axle(95 YJ)...did some water crossings in winter. Jeep realized the problem with this and eliminated the vacuum disconnect on the next generation jeep TJs.

okay, i want you to think this through...
the lever shifts to the right for low range...if that is the case then it will be hitting your leg off road...not good.

the vacumm shift is USUALLY on RHD units and on units that are 1985 and newer...

It does touch your leg but even for us long legged fellows its not too bad. Dont forget, all those 75 series in oz have a manual shift.

Any idea if Toyota are still producing vac shifts anywhere in the world? Oz stopped getting them in 1990 .
If any models still have it ,it would be the SWB 70 V8 diesel.

Ive never had any problems with mine, overall they were a fairly reliable set up

Sorry Wayne, but I'm not quite following you ...Many 4x4 vehicles by many different manufacturers have 100% lever shifted t-cases, obviosly they had to design them to not be interfering with the driver or passengers in the vehicle, so why not these BJ74s??? What I was getting at is...was there some benefit mechanically or otherwise that Toyota deemed it better to use a vacuum engagement for 4hi instead of a lever actuated 4hi...which in my opinion would be simpler and more dependable.

you have manual shift low range in a RHD unit? s*** that must be TIGHT. i find even the 2WH-2WL tight in some models and to have the lever come even more over into the drivers leg area must be brutal!!

i have yet to see the JDM units come in with a manual shift low range since 1985...

i wasn't trying to be condencending, i was trying to get you to picture what i was trying to describe...

mechanical advantage? hummm, good question... i can only think of the ergonomics...
