I'm planning a family camping trip to Creede, CO this 4th of July holiday weekend. As of now, the plan is to depart on either Friday, July 1st or Saturday, July 2nd and return home on Tues, July 5th. Not sure where we'll be staying at but here are two potential places for our base camp:

TrailDamage.com - Wheeler Geologic Area

TrailDamage.com - Bristol Head

Creede puts on a nice 4th of July fireworks and the town was full of activities so we wouldn't mind experiencing that again. There is a very cool self mining tour (with audio) that I wouldn't mind seeing again.

We'll probably make day trips in the area and return to base camp for dinner or eat out at Creede. If snow is not an issue, we should be able to see more places.

Base camp with be dry and primitive unless we find a FS campground that's within 15 miles (or less) from Creede. We'll be towing the Kamparoo on this trip.

Let me know if there are any interests.

Thanks.

I'm interested.
I've been to Wheeler Geo area - a nice side trip for the better part of a day.
The interesting stuff is in town and above in the mining district as you mention.....
I would count on the high trails, such as the Continental Divide to be inaccessible due to snow..

Will you be taking the Subaru or the Merlin (or both?)

looks fun too...

Jarosa mesa

Heart Lake

we'd really like to make it. but we'll need to be back on tuesday for work. might make it and duck out early. dunno yet.

i'm trying hard to make this happen for us. we have to be back at work on tuesday, and may or may not be able to head up on friday... packing dogs, kid and us into the cruiser. yippee...

As of now, our plan is to depart on Friday and return on Mon or Tues, not sure which day. It looks to be about a five hour drive from Tijeras. I'll keep an eye on the weather in Creede. If it looks like lots of moisture is predicted, we may have to pick another place to camp!

Well, if it will be wet farther south, but not north, drop me a line if you felt like going a few hours farther north. So far, we don't even get the thunderstorms that Denver gets every afternoon in the mountains--it's been real nice.

WAY more mining stuff to check out farther north also.

One more suggestion to explore farther south: the Cumbres and Toltec is operating again (and Lobato trestle has been rebuilt). Easy wheeling and exploring if you wanted to go look at trains in the mountains.

it IS looking at least kinda wet... i really wish that stuff would head south... grrr.

it wouldn't be any fireworks, and might still be wet... but have you been to sand dune national park? i've heard its way more than just sand and there are some trails around there... ? i'd like to visit someday.

Guys,

In light of the super dry and fire hazard conditions in our area, we've decided to stay put and work on our fire mitigation at our place. I'd hate to have a careless neighbor start a fire with fireworks and return to a charred house!

Sorry about this last minute change.

I hope you got some of this rain at your place. If not, I'd be hesitant to use a chainsaw around there. Would suck to start a fire trying to prevent it.

Made alternate plans to meet Juane in Salida and camp somewhere up there.

Work hard...

Excellent advice, thanks.

I've been busy clearing up the place, wishing I was camping instead! Also, allowed me to play catchup a little bit with projects.
