Is the first gear ratio 4.925 for the USA 4Speed? And just to check my math....crawl ratio is..... transmission lowest gear x TC low gear x diffs? I know the Non-USA 4Speed is lower, but I'm talking the garden-variety USA whorespeed.

    Thanks,

    Ed

    usa 4 speeds(h42) are like 3.0 or some thing like that non-usa 4 speeds (h41)are 4.99. 3 speeds(j30) are 2.7

The USA 4-speed from 1973-90 is called the H42 and has a first gear ratio of 3.55:1

The non-USA (usually from Australia) is called the H41 nad has a first gear ratio of 4.95:1

Merchants who market the H41 refer to the first gear as a "granny gear". In the US the H41 is much harder to find than the H42 and will cost a lot more as well. The nice thing about the H41 is that it is a direct bolt in swap: no adapters, changed cross members, or new drive lines are needed. I have the H41 and Orion t-case and love the combo...

Max, do you find the H41 to be "streetable" or do you not normally use 1st gear, like a 420 or 465? And BTW, is 1st synchro in the H41?

    Thanks,

    Ed

I have 4.88's and 35" tires. So I have a bit of a "under drive" affect. The first gear in the H41 is noticeably lower than the H42. Second and third are a little lower as well. I guess you can ignore 1st and start in 2nd but I use all four. From a cold stop I shift into 2nd after like 15 feet. The shift pattern seems nice though, better spaced than the SM4xx's that I have experienced. Most of the world got the H41's and I think it is better suited to a FJ40 cruiser. The H42 was made for the US market and its expansive freeway system. The one thing I like with the 1st gear is for use in stop and go traffic. I keep myself amused by inching along in 1st and seeing how little I need the brake peddle. I actually drive the 40 very little in terms of annual miles. On the trail the 4.88/H41/Orion combo is WAY nice. I can drive trail sections in 3rd gear (low range) that used to require 1st gear with the stock H42 tranny & t-case setup.

If I could wave a magic wand over my rig I would swap in 4.56 gears instead of the 4.88's I have now. I feel I have the low range I need but having a little taller setup for the street would be nice. The other option would be 37" tires for the slight "overdrive" affect. Right now both plans are not an option due to a lack of cruiser funds.

I'm running an H41, 4.11's, 35" tires, and 2F in my 40. On the street, after the 2F warms up, I generally start in 2nd. Cold engine, slight hill, or pulling a load (ie. boat and trailer) I use 1st. The H41 is a nice drop in tranny if you want lower gears.

A true granny gear uses an idler gear between 1st (and reverse) and the mainshaft to increase the ratio. That's one reason so many old trannies howl more in 1st and reverse than in the other gears.

ps - your math is correct :)

    Good combo....

Have set up two that way, and they love them.

According to Marv, the cases are not the same...the H41 case is larger on the inside...

    Good luck!

I'm running H42 with 4:11's, 33's, and ORION. Gearing for on road is good, the ORION low is awesome, having to climb most stuff in 3rd. 1st in a H41 and ORION with 4:11 and 33's would be hard to tell if you were even moving.AWESOME!
