I am currently planning on swapping my 2F for a Cummins 4BT. For those that actually wheel diesels. What are some of the advantages of diesels over the fuel engines. what are some of the drawbacks. Most of my miles are on highway, so MPG is there, but maybe 10 times/yr I go into the mountains on moderate trails, river crossings. Eventually I would like the vehicle to make it up Mt. Blanca, but that may be a way off. I guess I want a decent all-round vehicle. I know it difficult to do right, however do you think a diesel fits into that equation, and is the 4BT a good decision for that use. Thanks Guys.

Overall .. you gonna be soo happy with the swap .. 4BT is a heavy engine .. I'm pretty sure you need at least 4" of lift of SO .. is more loud than any gassser engine and maybe more than any Toy Diesel engine ..
In the good side .. place the torque and power .. you can do pretty powerfull engine with apropiate mods for cheap increasing the boost ..

they are really noisey too, weigh a bit more than any Toy diesel, was goin to do one into a Jeep J2000 awhile ago, the're a tought little motor , identical to the the bigger 6BT but 2 cyl less .
Yes 4BT's are noisy. I stood next to one at Moab, and you couldnt hold a conversation standing next to it. The Toy diesels are all pertty darn quiet. The 2L in my samurai sounds like a tractor, but its old technology.
Diesels are great off road. Lots of low RPM torque, more water resistant, much better fuel economy than a gas engine. But as Wayne has said repeatedly it's offset by the higher maintenance costs of running a diesel (pumps, injectors etc). I think you save a bit with diesel on fuel but it's over the very long run. Of course well engineered diesels usually last longer than a gas engine but for most it's not a big factor. Some people just really like diesels.
