I am thinking of doing a swap on the 4 liter an going 4BT Cummins. I also have Dana 60 front and rear I could cut down from the F 250 Diesel 6.9 I have at home. I am just wondering if the frame needs some added strength in the frame for the torque of the Cummins? Years ago I swaped the IFS out on the Ford with the Dana 60 Front end and rebuilt them both 4 years ago. What do you guys think? Possible? I have over 850,000km on the old Ford and liked it alot but the body has seen better days. The 6.9 still runs great but I think it is a perfect donor for a project. Anyone know if anyone has done this to a BJ74? Any help would be great.

well I guess you could do it. No different than a 60 series.

But I come the question what is gained? Is it a serious offroad rig? the cruiser axles are very strong. the 13b-t can be hopped up quite a bit. The 4b-t isn't that much bigger to justify it. Only half a litre. So why not intercool and run the psi up to 20 on the 13b-t?

if its power your after. The guys who do conversions with the 4bt they generally are in an area where diesel were not sold..

but hey it would give you good power.

Have you rebuilt the engine? If not I'd be hesitant to use it in the Toyota, just to pull it out again in a year for top and bottom overhaul. By the time you do all the fabrication it would suck to lose the engine to a $5000 rebuild.

My experience is that the 74/75 series dont handle the noise from big American diesels.
Most common cause of Landcruisers with 6.5 chevs being sold is the noise that enters the cabin at freeway speeds.

My neighbour spent 10s of thousands doing a 6.5 conversion on his 105 series and now he has a 100 series Sahara turbo diesel.

Toyota diesels were designed to be human friendly;)

I've driven a few american diesel pick ups, they are super quite. SO they must do better sound deadening than Yota.

From my experience it depends on the engine. I would say that the old Chevy diesels and Duramax are the quietest diesels from the big 3. Then would come the Fords and the Dodge Cummins way last until I think maybe the 05 model year. Got to wheel with a 60 that had a either a 1HZ turbo'd or a HD-T and that was a sweet running/sounding engine, better than my 13B-T.

but we need to compare aples with apples .. Duramax or Cummins 06 with 1HF-FTE .. can't with old 1HZ or 1HD-T engines ..

Thats what it is. The big US style pickups also have more metal to absorb the vibration and blank out the sound.

I was told the 6 cylinder in my BJ 74 can't handle more than 9- 10 psi of boost which is not really that high. I thought about building a manifold and water/air intercooler with a seperated coolant tank with alcohol/water and propane injection.I was told that the Toyota diesel is a asian Perkins? Is this true? Don't get me wrong here I think the 6 cylinder 4 liter is great in the bush but a little low on power for the high ways I drive on. Cheers

if it is a "BJ" 74 it has a 13b-t 4 cylinder. I've never heard the perkins runmour. That engine can handle lots of psi of boost. Its direct injected, so if intercooled why could it not handle 20 psi? The cummins go that high or much higher.

The six cylinder is a 4 litre. its called a 2H. So what engine do you have?

6cyl 4 lt BJ74??? It should be a 4cyl 3.5 litre.

Ive never heard the one about toyota diesels being a perkins design.
Maybe the B diesels share some design similarites with the Perkins 4 cyl??

Sorry it's a HZJ74 I cheched the registration and it has a ZX on the back door. I have only driven it once since I bought it. I thought it was a little slow on the highway. Can it be turbo charged with a aftermarket Garrett GT style turbo. How much boost can it take. I thought it was a BJ74. The BJ only came with a 4 cylinder? How much boost can it handle. Cheers

bj is the engine designation. HJ is a 2H your HZJ is a 1hz engine which kicks ass over a 4bt. IMOP, turbo it and you got a great engine. With loads of torque.

search 1hz turbo. Its been discussed on here before. Also crushers had a truck with that engine turbo'd. I drove it and it was very quick. Had propane. You could blink and be at 130 plus. So no need to re-invent a cruiser with bread truck engine.

I am looking at a Garrett GT 28 turbo and I plan or making the manifold and probably water jacket it too. Are the pistons in the 1HZ steel topped? I have looked at building a water to air intercooler I can build at work. Has anybody built there own turbo set up? Thanks

First thing to do with a HZJ73 is remove the resonator (just under the drivers door), and replace it with a 2 1/2" straight pipe - leave the stock muffler and the rest of the stock exhaust system in place.. It dropped my 0 to 100 km/h time 3 seconds. Your mileage may vary.

How do I Boost my 2L-TE

I want to run higher boost of my pathetic liter 4cylinder in search of more power. I understand the need for a pyro, and I have a boost gauge right now, and I plan on removing the EGR system. The thing I'm unsure of is how and where I can install a dual stage manual boost controller.

Does anyone have any pictures or directions on how to do complete such a task.

Also does anyone have any suggestions for which controller I should use??
