Does anyone know what the differences are, if any, between fj40 4spd. transmissions & fj60 4spd. transmissions? Is there any advantages in installing an 83 fj60 4spd. into a 78' fj40?

I might be wrong, but my understanding is that the only difference is the shifter location. On the 40 it is towards the front of the plate and the rear on the 60. There was also a difference between the pre-85 and post-85 4 speeds, the post-85 models have the spacer that makes them the same size as the H55.

I am installing the 4 speed and split transfer case combo out of an '87 FJ60 into my 68 FJ40.

So then it wouldn't help with hwy speeds at all would it!

Nope. All of the 3 speed and 4 speed transmissions have the same 1:1 ratio in the top gear. If you want some highway help, you would have to go with some sort of over drive setup, a h55 5 speed or different gearing in the axle. I am not sure if there is much help either from the different years transfer cases.

The 8/80 and later 4 speed have a 19 spline tailshaft and require a split transfer case. The early 4 speed have a 16 spline tailshaft and require one piece transfer case. So you have to have a matching transfer case.

Thanks, I knew I was forgetting something in my reply.

Plus you lose the hand brake on the back of the transfer case. Finding a kit to add one is getting hard to do and expensive. or locate a post 8/80 40 series axle or convert a 60/62 series to the rear.

Do the OverDrive set ups hookup fairly easy and are they hard to find ? I would love to have that hwy gear on my 3speed. :meh::wrench:

A little costly but H55F can still be bought new. The setup starts getting pretty long unless your doing a V8 conversion like woodsfj40 is doing.

Has anyone installed an h55f tranny in a 40? I know that they cost twice as much as a torque splitter though.

TheH55F is a five speed transmission not just a overdrive. There were a few overdrives available years ago for the 3 and 4 speed with the one piece transfer case. Fairey was the most common.

AA has the Ranger torque splitter that bolts onto the front of the 4 spd transmission but I'm not sure if it mates to the bellhousing. Not sure if it's just for a V8 conversion that retains the stock transmission or if you can use it with the 2F.

I have a new H55 in my SBC 74 FJ40, with a late model FJ62 split case transfer case, 4.11 gears and 33's. Much nicer than my 74 four speed, and this conversion has been worth the expense. I can cruise at 60-65 at about 2100 rpm, no gear whine, and much better mileage getting to wherever I'm going, with a nice low first gear for the trail.

When I decided that I wanted to go with the later split transfer case, I also decided that I wanted to go with the later FJ60 4 speed so I could bolt an H55 into my rig. I just don't have the money for one right now, and the 4 speed stuff is pretty cheap. If I had gone with the earlier, shorter one, I would have had to do more modifications down the road.

Don't know the answer to that question either. The only ones I've seen were made to a V8.

Yeah, I was reading their parts catalog and it doesn't say anything about the 2F, just the LC 4spd. Think I'll give'm a call tomorrow and get a definite answer.

If you can use a Ranger behind a 2F your back to the same problem of a H55F with 2F your running out of room in the back. Rear driveline starts getting real short. That's the reason they list it for a V8. The V8 is shorter than the 2F.

Lots of people have done this. Very, very common going behind Toyota engines into a 40, B, 3B, 13BT, 14B, 1HZ to name some, the F series gassers as well although I'm not as familiar with those.
