as for the top end is there a significant difference in the gear ratios? i seem to recall reading the H55 is .85% (?) but don't know about the 4 spd. is the H55 significantly better?

4speed is same as 3 speed.....1:1. No gain in top end. Toyo 5 speed needs splitcase transfer and(I think) floorboard mods, too.

What's there to argue about? The H55 is a better way to go. Yep, it needs the split case; however, that's stronger than the earlier transfers anyway.

Are you talking about the H41??? or the H42...(what we got here in the US...)

H42 has a 3.5XX first gear ratio, 1:1 4th gear
H41 has a 4.85 first, 1:1 4th.
H55F has 4,85 first, .85% overdrive 5th gear

h41 has 4.95 1st-- lower than h55f
but not much lower

according to the TLCFAQ:

http://www.birfield.com/modules.php?name=TLCFAQ&p=/~ramullen/FAQ/TEXT/08-01.html

H41 transmissions came with three different ratio's (any of these features should discerne what's inside) depending on:

model year ( FJ55: 1969-1971, or pre 1981 with a: B,F,2F,H,2H, or post 1981 with a: B,F,2H)

spline count (of transfercase input): 10, 16, or 19

low-range ratio of: 2.313, 1.992, 1.959

it also illustrated the ratio differences between the H41, H42, and H55-F

Cheers,
Steve

Hi Steve, I've been looking for my transfer case information; not near the truck now. 1988 LC HJ61 12ht, H55; can you link me to where I can read the info on transfer cases, transmission ratios... the truck is a Sahara model also; just bought it last week.

I think you can get an FJ40 top plate so you do not have to relocate the tranny cover. Also, since the H55 is longer, you may have to rework both driveshafts. Go to my build thread, Second 40, and scroll down a bit to see how I moved the hole.

Any 40 series top cover for a H55F you find would be used. They have been NLA for a very long time. Projects to reproduce them have not happened at this point. But for a HJ61 a 60 series top is the correct one. Those are still available as well as the whole five speed transmission.
